sorry if this isn't the correct section mods i figured its as good as any other
So i been prototyping for a few years now as a hobby and always was interested in designing my own woofers. Thought it would be cool to have something unique and something i designed.
needless to say over the years I've tried a few build houses and liked them. This time around i wanted something more custom/unique. and its based on low distortion and high displacement. everyone has their topology/design this is MINE.. I contacted a few build houses and ultimately found one.
I opted first to keep mass as low as possible unfortunately its higher than i wanted but its fine becasue its not terrible and the cone is very very strong. wanted to get very low inductance and to make the design as linear as possible without having a stupid price tag(otherwise i would have done the CF cone).
I opted for a longer coil. A 4 layer coil to save on mass and increase surface area by using a long coil all while keeping the inductance down and frankly low as possible. (1.56mH, coil mass is under 100 grams!)
one flaw to the design this is needing a LARGE top-plate to increase BL to a usable level. Its taken a few prototypes and time to get it where it is but it sounds GREAT. the original driver had stacked spiders and the former had no holes. so i opted to recone it and get another coil wound on a vented former and to space the spiders to prevent rocking/rubbing becasue the top-plate and coil/former is so long and gap is so tight. it will be reconed in a week or two when the parts come in and i have time. It's rated for 2kw RMS.. I'm going to run it on 3.5 for testing. some of the draw backs to this design are the damn thing is HUGE in order to get the motor strength.. It will handle 3kw and sounds EXCELLENT for a driver capable of 33+ mm Xmax and taking 3kw daily.
I personally love the high output low distortion drivers(ill admit i LOVE the JBL GTI and XXX/barhma) and this woofer is right up my alley. Anyways im gonna post a few pictures of the driver and i have one of the coil/former.
The original prototype i tested on a TS 3500 @ 1ohm in a 3.5 cubes tuned to 32 with 35in^2 of port area(way to small and not enough port area). The gain was set according for the initial testing and it handle 3kw with ease. Then i said **** IT TURN IT UP!!! its still alive but it was clipped pretty damn good.. i hear a little rub when i push on it but it plays fine with no noise. haha. so i changed a few things to improve the cooling/reliability.
once the recone is done its going into 4.25 tuned to 35 with 70in^2 of port area for more listening and torture testing. I've flirted with the idea of doing a production run but im not exactly sure if i will or not. The market is flooded and the economy has stunk for a few years now but hell i might just take a leap and try. if anyone is interested just let me know..
@MASSIVESPL dont come spout about the driver if you dont know the facts. i don't care if you have criticism or if you dont like me but its NOT A CLONE ITS NOT COPIED I DESIGNED IT with a little help from the build house becasue they have the FEA and programs which i can't afford so unless you have proof im coping something/one fine! which you never will becasue it doesn't exist!
the revised former/coil with the cooling vents to help dispurse more air around the coil/gap.
Next to a HDC3 15
shot of the coil/former
dual leads per coil 10" spiders these where sandwiched not spaced(build house said it was a mistake) so im going to use spacers to fix that..
excited about testing it. the original sounds like a GTI on roids. it was loud as hell and sounded transparent at those levels. its not a fart woofer its meat to sound excellent and will be a great streetbeat driver. its capable of handling 3kw in 4.5 cubes and having SICKING lowend while sounding as good as any driver designed to do so. of course your going to get some fairly high group delay in this alignment but in the correct alignment the group delay is below the human threshold..
comments and criticism welcome just make damn sure if you criticize you can back that shit up..
