Default Audio Contraptions "A 3 C" coil testing

Some have seen past info but i will quickly fill anyone in thats lost.

A 3 C ( Audio Contraptions Coil Concepts) have been working on several coil designs. one is now patent pending and the other is getting ready for some hopefully exciting test results which will be in this thread.

* the motor used in this test was chosen due to price point and how common it is. THIS IS NOT a SUNDOWN VS "xxx" comparison.*

initial parts came in yesterday. i bought a shifted SA motor as thats the most practical route. and the cheapest basket, cheapest cones and small dust caps for back compression.

The Coils specs-

STANDARD WOUND COIL
4 Layer flat alum

2.50" WW

2.662" OD

2.50" ID

TOTAL VOLUME OF MATERIAL 1.64196 inch³

PROTOTYPE COIL-

4 Layer round alum

1.843" WW

2.674" OD

2.474" ID

TOTAL VOLUME OF MATERIAL 1.49033 inch³
-----------------------------

Both coils are D2
Both are .008 BAA
Both will be weight matched when in assembly
Both test assemblies will use the same cone, single spider with single leads, same dust cap and same motor/basket

the regular coil has vent holes closed as the motor does not utilize vented formers.

as seen, the regular coil does have the advantage. all the better if i beat it.

each assembly will be made, mass matched (to make sure there exact for FS /mms comparison) and ran on AC signal. starting at low power and increasing while taking temp comparison along the way finishing with "failure mode". each coil will have an attached temp monitor for live time readings during use.

here are the parts that arrived yesterday. i was sent one spider instead of two (nothing new).

sexiest basket ever

extreme throw cones

one of the spiders, single lead small power

more half A

motor half B

the baby coil.

frame had a regular bolt pattern (5 on 127) and the sa (this one atleast) has a slightly smaller 5 on 120.

that basket

drew up a simple template and cut it from some wood. bolts are to keep it centered on the holes.

bingo

reassurance tape

make a mess

bingo v2

I have missed out recently, what is the ultimate goal? Pure SPL or better/more efficient design?

I've never, not one time, seen a gain from 45's. People think of ports as a wind tunnel. They don't work that way. They resonate. They don't produce wind. If it was a wind tunnel, 45's would be more than justified. But it isn't.

I would definitely be tempted, but I got rid of my last set of non xbl^2 motors a couple months ago . Although I have been wanting to get an overhung motor to build up and you're definitely helping to persuade me.

this specific coil is for advanced cooling/efficiency which leads to better spl/long bass race type runs or overall better daily performance to keep the coil cooler and more stable.
