Default SMD DD-1 distortion detector review

Ok so im going to start off by saying i was open minded when i was buying this unit really didnt know what to expect. It helps you set your gains on your amp so you dont have dirty signal, distortion which would lead to clipping your equipment(no bueno). The way i used to set my gains at first was by the 3/4 rule, then i went to the dmm setting guild, then i switched to the dd-1 my first impressions of this new toy would have to be very ridged the silicon boot feels like good quality. It doesnt come with a 9volt battery but thats not that big of a deal. My highs and mids alot clearer and louder.. also the subs sound alot deeper to my and my gf ears. i would never go back lol. The amps i have set so far with this unit are alpine kicker and planet audio will be a jl 1000/1 monday.
Also i dont have a head unit in my car so i had to rip the cd in itunes but you have to use the loss less format option when you import it or just use the cd if you have that option
Bottom line yes i would recommend for a friend and would purchase another

heres the web site i found it on ordered Friday was delivered Tuesday

Did the dmm method get close to the clipping point that the dd-1 found?

I just bought one of these as well because I wanted to see if they stood up to the hype. I also have a Velleman o-scope that I've been using to set gains and HU's with...

My HU's clipping volume with my scope was 36/40 so I couldn't go above 35...once I got the DD1 I plugged in an RCA to the device and my clipping volume is now 40/40...I can keep it at 39/40 safely (if the DD1 is doing it's job right)

I haven't set the gains any further on my amp because I'm already pushing a DC 5.0K to two 12's rated for 1500 each and I don't want to kill them...but I know the signal is clean where it is!

Great little device I have to say...and much quicker to use than my scope

i know with my sax1200d's the dd1 told me to set the amps much higher than the dmm method, also had me run my head unit much higher as well.

anyone have any success using it under load(not disconnecting the speakers)

Nope...HPS140, the pocket scope. I didn't test the RCA's with that one the first go around but will be soon just for a comparison. I tested through the amp with all settings turned down (or up for HPF and what not). HU settings didn't change though...I still need to do a small tear down to add some equipment and when I do I'll test the RCA's with the Velleman for confirmation...

using dmm method the gain will be set higher when speakers are connected vs not connected

should you set gains with load or no load? would a load give you a more accurate reading?
