Today I was given the opportunity to take a set of the prototype ST1 horn loaded tweeters from obsidian audio and play with them.
First impressions were great, I've been running a pair of selenium supertweeters for a while and I've liked them for the most part except for the size, they are pretty massive, the obsidian tweeter however is much smaller in comparison.
I am running the set active crossed at 4k. This is the same for the seleniums. From the initial side by side comparison having one in each door you could tell a distinct difference between the way the 2 tweeters preform, the obsidians being much more musical while keeping up with the selenium in output volume.
When both ST1s were installed I could immediately tell the difference as far as how directional my seleniums were. The ST1s seemed to offer a more special filling sound. They offered very high degree of detail at high volumes, and not being drowned out by mids and bass.
Overall so far, the ST1 offers a high level of output with its horn design in a compact frame, while retaining the clarity you would expect from a silk dome tweeter making extended periods of listening less painful. I enjoy these mostly for the fact they are much smaller but they are also a very good sounding tweeter offering high levels of output.
I would most definatley recommend this to anyone looking for a fantastic sounding horn tweeter.
