Default Stereo Integrity TM65

First, some photos:

Stereo Integrity TM65 by Gilbert Kless, on Flickr

I put mine in today, and my initial impression was one of slight disappointment. There was a hollow sound and I found myself reaching for EQ. Vocals sounded a bit odd. Quick RTA showed 500Hz was down, but I'm not totally sure at this point it's solely the drivers themselves. Might be the way they're playing with the truck. I also noticed that they don't seem as efficient as the Anarchy's I took out, seems like they both handle more and require more power to get loud. Seemed like the snap of a snare drum was more in your face though, I did like that.

Regardless, I only have about 45 minutes on them, so I will definitely give them some time. Both of the symptoms I've described will almost definitely subside after break in. I also only have them on like 30W or so, temp amp right now until my Ground Zero amps get here. I'm excited to see what they hold in store. I will be revisiting the Anarchy's in another month or two, and do a true side-by-side with both broken in well.

Here's another review where the initial symptoms were also seen, and disappeared after some listening: Average Joe Review: Stereo Integrity TM65 - Car Audio | DiyMobileAudio.com | Car Stereo Forum

Did you have a similar suck out around 500hz with the Anarchy?

Maybe it's the size of the vehicle I usually have, but 500-600hz always gives me trouble.

thats why I break in my drivers, that way you don't have to figure out if it's a driver issue or other. they look nice though.

I did not. Even went back and looked at my older RTA posts. I'm still sorting through my old RTA results, but I distinctly remember having a null at 100Hz before, which I am not seeing now. I also had either 1k or 2k, I can't remember which, but it was probably 1k since I'm seeing that now as well, so that's probably the vehicle/install. I am seeing it down at 200, 500, and 1k. I will admit I used pink noise this time, and always did sweeps in the past. Shouldn't make a big difference, but I want to have a direct comparison.

These really are built well. After that last picture above, I was trying to pry them apart and didn't have a good grip on the one and it took a couple tumbles across the floor (carpet, luckily). This was my exact reaction -->

They're heavier than they look and you would think with them being neo. Bigger motor structure than most with neo as well.

Results from pink noise will be very different than those of sweeps.

Sweeps show around 650 high, but 200-500 and 1k down. The 1k is my install, but seems like the 2-500 area is the driver at this point. Interesting, because with the Anarchys I was getting a null at 100, which isn't present now.

Normally pink noise is more accurate/trustworthy right?

Swept sine measurements will be better, but regardless of what you use it's important to take the average of several measurements within the listener's headspace for frequencies >~200hz. Otherwise you might hit a small point in space where there's a null or peak, but because this point is so small it's not representative of what you would actually hear.

Thanks for the review and those awesome pics! If you're having more output in the 1-2khz range that would explain why the SIs sound more snappy.

Thanks man! This was a pretty short review and the drivers are minimally tested at this point. These were pretty much just my initial thoughts on them with under 45 minutes play time, so not much really. Right now I'm pretty much just going to throw a little power to them and wait for break in. Also waiting on new amps (Ground Zero, excited for those!) and at that point the setup will change and I'll retune. I'll give these a good listen, then swap the Anarchys back in, and then back to these. At that point I think I'll be able to give a fair comparison/review.
