I just had to do this. Most people have heard of DD and know the damage that these subs can do but i figured i would post all the nice things i've learned about it.
So i ordered a DD3512 with Dual 1.5ohm coils and the Carbon Fiber cap option. This was a used driver but when i got it, it was very stiff, and still stiff for that matter. First apperance is"this thing really gets loud and handles a ton of watts" The motor is alot smaller then the subs you see nowadays with 50-60 lb motor assemblies. The DD weighed in at a conservative 32 lbs. The tall EROM was sexy with the CF cap though. The driect termanates are always a plus! From the looks of it, the DD wasnt much different from an Audioque HDC3. In fact, if you diguised the motor, it would be almost exactlly the same.
So first off i tried this in a 2.5cuft box tuned to 35hz. DD recommends [email protected]
I hooked it up to my Sundown saz-1500d at 3ohms to begin with. Then wired down to .75
I started with a little rap, always good for bass. First thing i noticed was this sub was way louder at lower volumes then anyother subs ive had. In fact it was loud enough to shake paper in my car but when i popped the trunk, the sub wasn't even moving! Due to DD's low moving mass, their able to pull effeciency out of there asses! Once i started adding volume, the sub stared to open up! Sound quality was decent, but not even close to something as say a TC. Was able to reproduce lows very well actually and because the tuning was lower then recommended, it enforced the lows better in the 25-35hz region.
Once i switched to a parallel setting things changed. This sub was power hungry! I was able to max out my sundown on this sub thats only rated at 1200rms and was able to get half excursion at best. The pressure from one 12 was incredable! I actually had a full, unopened can of monster sitting in my counsel and when i let it rip at full tilt it would make the can jump and dance. Alot! Windshield and door flex was very apparent. But the sub got hot fast. Upon speaking with a few people, i learned that 2.5 was not enough for this sub, so i built a new box.
Now i have 3cuft tuned to 36hz, and just by adding a half a cuft the difference was a lot. The sub moved more freely, and was louder with more pressure. It actually ran cooler also since it had more room to breath.
And i was actually told the optimal box for this was 3.5-5cuft. Wow thats a huge box.
All in all. this is one of the best subs ive owned. Gets extremely loud for one 12, even off little wattage. I wouldnt recommend it for a SQ setup but for competition, one of the best!
**************** Ok, so i had to come back and update this. Since i wrote this, I switched out amps to 2 AQ1200's strapped. I beat the crap out of this sub with about 2800w with my amps at.75ohms strapped (.37ohms a piece!) And this sub took it like a champ! got a little stinky after about 5 min at full tilt but cooled off real quick. I think this thing would easily take 3500 for 30 sec! Continues to amaze me and its only a middle of the line DD. This thing IMO is like the king of daily drivers!
just an old fart
