Default Digital Designs 9512G

I have for the longest wanted to compare several 12 inch woofers and last winter i had the chance to purchase one used (i couldnt afford the $600+ new price). I didn't get a chance to switch out my Heavyweight for it until this past summer and drove around with it all this semester to see how I liked it.

The subs are definitely similar in sound, and I can see now why so many struggled to give a fair comparison. One thing i noticed is, in the same box, it didn't hit the lows as well but did hit the highs better, where as on the higher bass notes the Heavyweight basically poops out and you feel nothing. It didn't move nearly as much and required a less power than the RD (i gave it around 2500wrms) which was a plus as far as helping save my electrical system. Also cosmetically the DD looks WAY better than the RD, especially with the Carbon Fiber dust cap and i personally love. Besides that they were basically the same imo...

Due to my preferences i switched back to the RD. In the end it had much better SQ and got a lot louder especially in the low bass notes. I think the DD is a much better choice for anyone that wants a speaker that plays a wider range of notes or has less power to offer. Definitely not a bad choice though, just rather pricey for a 12" subwoofer.

Sound Quality: 8/10
Power handling: 9/10
Low Frequency Extension: 9/10
Output: 9/10
Build Quality: 10/10
Total: 45/50

I agree with this review... im not to sure dd subs are worth the "high price" yes they are built like tanks, but after the experience of demoing an re mt 15 for a authorized dd dealer/installer... he looked ... at the time i was looking to upgrade to 2 dd 12s I promptly waved

What are the box specs? I love the RD HW but the 9500 will hit lower, play flatter and be much more efficient in a properly built box.

The box is 2.5 cu tuned to ~34hz. I'll have to go take measurements if you want exact dimensions.

I was always told the 9500 will be more efficient but i think it's just on power, not box size. If you recommend a bigger box you won't be the first. but with my trunk size i can't do a box that's much bigger and get it to fit thru the opening much less have space for other things back there.

i agree with ur review, i have my DD9512d in 3 cubes at38 hz. it gets really loud but i also feel the lows are lacking, i had a RD HW V2 a while back and that defiantly got alot lower and was more musical. all in all i love the DD and am still running it but i miss the authority some of my past subs hit the low notes with.

I dont want to come off as a DD "nut hugger." But from my experience it's just a low bass monster. And the 9500 hits lower then the rest of the DD series. They also play far below tuning. Even tuned at 38" a 9500 can play decently low, you just need a lot of port area. The negative thing I can say about DD, is that it requires a lot more skill and experience to design an optimal enclosure for a DD then any other brand I can think of. Either way thanks for your review. An if possible, try over 3 cu ft after displacement tuned to the same 34 hz with 18 sq inch per cu ft. My 9512 SC loves it!

With a big box, in high tuning, and a strong sub.. duh you arent getting "lows". Compared to the huge peak youre getting around tuning along with the vehicle gain, i wouldnt be surprised thats how you feel.
