Default XL M1 Enclosure size experiences.

I need to do some more work to lower the variables down at play here but apparently everything i thought would happen didnt so now i'm a noob again, lol.

I have 4 18" XL M1s in ~27cuft Net right now with no port length except for baffle which is 1.5".

I have ability to switch on\off 1,2,3 or 4 subs on at once.

When i had 1 or 2 subs going, i had 0 low end audible below 40hz.
When i have 4 subs going, low end barely is audible to about 36hz but thats it.

I threw in 7 35" long 2x4s in the port and BAM, low end came back just great down to the low 20s and clearily audible.

Now, i decided to test to see what the wall is peaking at right now before i seal the wall off and record a cabin gain sweep graph of the car before i start tuning..
Well, this is where it gets even more weird.

I have 2 ~6sqin holes in the port wall that need to be sealed up but thats the only 2 air leaks so far in the enclosure.

The car, at passenger side head rest ~28" from glass did 46hz sealed, 45hz outlaw.
Something weird going on here...
When only 2 subs are playing, it peaks at 57hz sealed, outlaw unknown.

So my first of many questions is-

Do these 18" XL M1s like extremely small enclosures?

I used to run Level4s and they liked large enclosures in my vehicle with street and wall enclosures but these XLs are confusing the hell out of me.

In for this. I've got 4 XL m1 18s that I'm building a wall for in about a week.

I know what it does clean, clipped, dirty, loaded, unloaded, wired down, low voltage, good voltage, after it hot, while it's cool, on caps, on batts, where it protects, what's thermal limits are and just about anything else anyone would care to know about it.

But thanks for chiming in. Your opinion is duly noted.

I would run 5.5-6ft3 net per sub to start with. The low end not being there was due to the fact that you had no port. You tuning was probably somewhere around 70hz or higher.

I would recommend 14in2 of port area per ft3 of net airspace and a tuning of around 33hz.

I used to run 21,000w on 3 Level4s... I'm running each 5500d @2ohm right now per sub so they are seeing baby power for my types of installs.

I have discovered why it wasn't there. My bare port is tuned to 36hz, this is why i was frustrated. One of my ext. processors has MAJOR faults internally which when bypassed raised my burp testing score up 7db. Now, the low end is back and better than ever! After i am able to finish gain matching and sealing the port completely, i will then start the tuning process.

27net right now, 320sqin of port as of right now tuned to 36hz. Issue solved as stated above.

I still needed recommended sizes for these subs so that was good to know.

My goal is to do 850dbs with stock windshield so wish me luck.

For SPL purposes, my old XL 12s were best to be in 1.5 cubes before displace each.
