Default 3/4" birch vs 1/2" birch

I've rear through all of the birch threads and saw a couple of people say 1/2" birch is just as strong as 3/4" mdf. How many people have been able to use 1/2" birch? I'm getting ready to build a 4th order and 3/4" birch is $59.99 per sheet locally. I'm only running 2 sa-12's on ~1500 watts. Will 1/2" hold up or do I need 3/4"?

1st do NOT believe 1/2" is as strong as 3/4"
2nd it is much harder to shoot a nail or drive a screw into the side of 1/2" without having a shiner
3rd, your glue surface is 33% less with 1/2 than 3/4.

So in short, don't cheap out, get 3/4"

If you are worried about price get cabinet grade plywood, (accuro-ply) at most stores. It's all I use, and I know a lot of other people that use it, normally $30ish for a sheet.

If price is such and issue just get MDF, but if you want birch then just get the 3/4th...

my box is 8 cubes going into a honda, there is no way I'm using mdf. I didn't think about nailing and gluing a 1/2" piece vs 3/4". That's more then enough to spend the extra $

Cabinet grade plywood is the way to go. I made similar size boxes one with mdf and one with cabinet and the cabinet was 30 lbs lighter.

This.

It's all I use. Cheaper and lighter than MDF.

I have used Concrete form ply on a few boxes recently and really like it! it hold a screw like nobodies business, cuts good, and sounds pretty dead.

local hardware store, kinda like Home Depot. It is commonly called "Red edge"

Here MDF is $50 per sheet, and red edge is $42
