Default How can I design an optimal enclosure?

Ive always just done regular slot ported boxes, tuned to my liking. But isnt there a way to make a better enclosure? Like finding what your cars resonent frequency is or something like that?

The set up is going to be two SA 12's on atleast 1500rms if not more. I want to get the most i can out of these things. Theyre going in a trunk car.

Any kind of input?

i always consider the resonance / acoustical characteristics of the vehicle when i design an enclosure. as far as i know, its the only way to design one properly. of course, there are more than a few idiots out there who dont really consider the environment of the vehicle, they only go by the size / quantity of drivers and making sure the enclosure will physically fit in the vehicle.

any design that doesnt consider the unique acoustical characteristics of the vehicle / listening environment is a pitiful joke at best. but maybe im over thinking it, ive only been doing this for 16 years.......

Well, its mostly going to be daily but i wouldnt mind making another box too if it would benefit me in a higher score if i did decide to do some comp with these things. So i guess for now i would like to make a good daily box.

For Daily I would just tune between 32 and 38 depending on your preference of lows vs highs. Tuning an enclosure to a car really only matters for competing IMO. I am sure captain no bullsh!t will say otherwise lol.

Another option could be using a removable port for daily/comp.

Another important question is do you use your back seats/ would you be apposed to a trunk wall?

If you don't want to do a trunk wall you pretty much have two options which are regular ported in the trunk or 4th order ported through the ski hole or through upper deck.

Ive got quite a big trunk so id like to use that, dont want to lose the back seats. I wouldnt mind doing a 4th ported into the car.. Im not sure if through the seat hole would work or not, But i know that there is already kind of a hole in the rear deck from the factory, its got a metal grill/cover over it. Im not sure what its for, it wasnt for the factory sub cuz the factory subs in this car were the 6x9's so i dono what its for but i could use it im sure. Although through the seat hole would work MUCH better as i dont think i want the box that tall.

Also im going to want it tuned a little more on the lower side.

If i do a standard slot port box, I wanted to make this one nice. Maybe some 45's in it, or 45 the port around the corner.. Maybe a kerfed port but i dont think ill be able to do that myself..

Ok well i looked at the seat and i dont think the hole is big enough to port through. I think my best bet is to just make a nice slot ported enclosure. That way i can put it in any of my cars.

I want to make a nice ported box for these things. Do you think that 45's anywhere in the box would be of any benefit? I guess i would just have to test that myself, Prolly no way of knowing if they'd help or not.

Would a 45 or some sort of curve in the port around the corner be of any benefit?

45's or kerfs in ports help quite a bit... but I would do aero ports this time around if you can. Or a square port to maximize efficiency and minimize port noise if you don't want to use pvc and stick with mdf.
