Having such a large kerf on the inside may change the dynamics of the enclosure. With that design you linked, if you put a 4" kerf on the inside end of the port, the kerf would end about 8" from the baffle. Effectively that would create another chamber inside the enclosure. Since the sub is in that chamber, it might
act like a ported chamber with 8"w x 13"h x 0.75"l port. Just guessing I think it would be ok if the kerf diameter didn't exceed half of the depth from the baffle to the port, but a smaller kerf or just a flare would be as effective in reducing port noise and less likely to interfere with the enclosure dynamics.
