Default ?s for IB set up for BMW 325ci

Just got the car yesterday and thinking of doing a system on it already. I have some subs laying around but not sure if they would work for an IB set up.

This is what I have for subs....

2 RE audio srx 15
1 Sundown SA15
2 Obsidian audio 18
1 RE audio XXX 15
1 soundstream T6 12

Would any of them work for an IB set up in that car? If not I will build a box of them but wanted to see if I could do an IB set up.

2 RE audio srx 15 - ok for IB (0.41=QTS, 23 Hz=FS, 18mm=xmax)
1 Sundown SA15 - ok for IB (0.60=QTS, 30.9 Hz=FS, 19mm=xmax)
2 Obsidian audio 18 - ok for IB (0.73=QTS, 27 Hz=FS, 20mm=xmax)
1 RE audio XXX 15 - which model?
1 soundstream T6 12 - specs not readily available

A couple of things you want to look at when deciding whether or not a speaker is suitable for IB is the QTS, FS, and Xmax of a driver.

The lower the QTS the tighter the subwoofer will be...the higher the QTS the more LFE you get (kinda like a home theatre subwoofer).

You want a driver with a low FS...if you choose a driver with a higher FS then you may have to EQ the system a little more.

IB is all about displacement so you either need multiple drivers or drivers with a higher xmax to get a decent amount of output. However, it typically only takes half of the drivers rated power to push it to its mechanical limits.

I am no expert on the matter but I have done some research and this advice appears in almost every IB design thread.

Without knowing what RE XXX 15 you have or the specs for the Soundstream T6 12, I would go with the Obsidian 18's...they should be great IB.

Just remember if your going ib you need 10x vas otherwise it will just act as a sealed box

You are never going to get 10x vas in a car unless you are using very small drivers and we all know how well small drivers perform IB. 3-4x vas in a car is acceptable. People say 10x vas is required for "true IB" but unless you are venting to the outside world, you will never get the true definition of IB in a car.

The RE XXX would be a good candidate also - QTS=0.501, Xmax=54mm, FS=19.10Hz...the Obsidian 18's would still probably get the edge over the XXX's.

you can hear, and most definitely feel an IB setup. I had a good 1" of windshield flex in my IB set up.

Yes that would be about right. 5.544 cubic feet is the vas of those woofers. Even if you don't have 3x vas for each woofer, I'm sure you'll still be very happy with that pair of Obsidian 18's IB. If you model 3x vas, 10x vas, or 50x vas you'd be surprised how little the model changes. Don't get caught up too much in the numbers.
