rule of thumbs suck, you get to do a ton of math for anything in this hobby if you want it done right.
before I go further, what is your definition of "port compression?"
I want to make sure your talking about what I think you are

I guess like port velocity, i made a new port for my box and it did nothin, im trying to lower tuning. I have a 36 for daily and it plays into the mid twenties well, but the one i made is longer tuned to 28 and wont play low for some reason, my woofers act like they are over-excurting. I have a 42hz port and it plays everythin above 30. Like i wanted it to do.
My ports are all the same port area, just different legnths

its to hard to measure

does your port bend ?
does it load near a wall of the box?
does it load near a boundary in the car?
how much power you plan on using ?
do you have a flared port end ? if not port noise will be more audible

there are place on line that have some graphing and math to understand it but in car audio all bets are off its a whole new world when your roll up the windows or open a door or hatch
