Say you have your port that's 6" wide. When it makes the turn, it doesn't turn with the panel. It goes down the centerline. So, the effective port will go 3" past the corner of the panels. The other 3-4" is probably an end correction because when using a common wall with the box, the effective port length extends one half of the width of the port past the panel end.
I guess it's kinda hard to explain. Lol.
