Default When the port isn't quite right...

So. The guys at Lowe's didn't cut the wood quite as accurately as I hoped. Or my pencil marks were slightly off (I was marking it, the guy was operating the machine). Anyway, point is once the box was finished it was a wee bit off. My 3.25" slot turned into 3".

Doing the calcs, this isn't a big deal since it'd just downtune it to 31Hz and boost the volume to 3.3-ish, but it doesn't STAY at 3". At the back end of the 16" second slot, it's almost 3.5", so what kind of effect might this have? Weird resonance? Port noise issues? Resistance?

For reference:

For reference:

Well if you remove the rear board of the port and readjust it you can make it an even 3" all the way around, then cut it to make up for the change in port width to equal the tuning you wanted originally, as for port noise that will depend on the driver and the power you supply to it, and if the volume is too large for what you wanted, add some wood to the inside to take up space. It is an easy fix.

Uuuuunfortunately, my dumb ass didn't notice until the end. I didn't measure the front opening at all (since it's just how the boards fit together, so I didn't think there'd be a problem) and I guess when I drilled it together it shifted without my noticing. So when it was finished/carpeted I looked at it a moment and and measured the front slot, noticed it a touch smaller than I wanted, measured the END and it was a touch bigger.

The volume isn't a big deal, we're talking 3.25 -> 3.35 or even less in terms of net volume, and the drivers I'm looking at say 3.25-3.5 are where you want to be. The tuning isn't a problem either, as far as I can tell. Throwing the numbers around it can't shift the tuning more than 1Hz in either direction. My concern right now is just that the waver in port width doesn't mean there'll be all sorts of noise and resistance issues that mean I need to rebuild. :P

LOL, that's probably what I'm gonna do. Just now it's a matter of getting the sub to toss in there.

One thing y'all may learn about me here is that I'm amazingly anal retentive at times. I ask a thousand questions, harp on minor details, have a hard time settling my mind on one thing, etc. I was 99% on a Death Row 15, but with the deals on the RD Alphas I might go that way, plus who knows what else.

That's one reason I built the box and the amp already. It kinda seals me in to getting a 15" sub that works in a 3.5cu or smaller box that takes 1200-1400 RMS. I can't flipflop and think about two 12's or this or that 15 that needs a 4.5cu box or whatever else. I had to FORCE myself to limit my options haha.

Get the RD.

No one has said anything bad about the alpha series.

The deathrow series doesn't have enough support behind it for my taste.

Not to mention it would save me $100, my man. I admit the price difference had me worried, like for some reason the RD is a "cheaper" sub (not just less expensive). But you do make a point that there isn't a whole lot written about the DR's.

Thanks man, that's an ease off my mind. You're definitely right that it isn't an SPL setup, this is a daily driver all the way. I mean I want to get loud, but I'm not doing burps or anything like that.
