Default JL Microsubs or build my own?

Hey all,

I've been trying to gather info and running scenarios of building a small box for my Subaru BRZ. Trunk space is at a premium, so I'd like something I can set behind the back seat (which would normally be folded down except to hide the subs or the once in a blue moon chance I need to fit someone back there).

The ideal dimensions would be 38"x12"x as shallow as possible. This leaves about an inch on all sides, though I do think it would be nice to totally separate the passenger compartment from the trunk area for cosmetics. I've been looking at 8's as well as shallow mount options.

Then I've come across a JL microsub with two 8w3v3's, which measures 36"x11"x5.5". Almost ideal.

Any thoughts or comments regarding the JL vs custom enclosure? I would be using a diamond D600.1, which is [email protected] and [email protected]

Do the JL microsubs contain some type of magic no one knows about?

They are nice looking enclosures, that's for sure. Think about cheating and copying that particular design, building it yourself using a different brand. Sundown had shallow mount speakers that have no pole vents, ideal for shallow boxes

JL sprinkles the cones and surrounds with rare moon crystals and infuses the terminals with albino elephant tusk. That's why they cost so much. They don't perform better than other brands, but this is why they are so expensive. Same with audioquest and taralabs RCA's and speaker wire. Although the audioquest use rare moon crystals and adamantium metal braiding in their wires.

I'm not sure I would call it cheating However, from the pictures I've seen, it looks like the ports are on the side of the enclosure. I'd like my box to pretty much fill the width of the trunk, so I would have to move the ports to the front. So it would have to be a new design.

Or I could make the build simpler and go with three 8's sealed. However, modeling that in WinISD makes me wonder why anyone would ever go sealed. Maybe its really not that bad in "real" life.

Do the 8w3v3's have the unobtanium baskets as well?

The microsub design is just a vented enclosure. I haven't seen the inside of one, but it looks like the vent runs across the top and possibly down the left side (if looking from the front) in order to make enough length to get the tuning low. This also provides a ton of front-to-back bracing.

"I'd like my box to pretty much fill the width of the trunk, so I would have to move the ports to the front. So it would have to be a new design."

The way JL does it is really the best way. If you're trying to do a front-firing slot port you'll loose depth or need to have the vent be really short. You could always make a trim piece that surrounds the side-firing port. Put some metal grill material on the front of the trim and it should blend nicely.

Don't be ridiculous. The baskets are made out of aborted fetus bones. Makes them stronger

Why not just run a 12 IB? Then you don't have to worry about a box... Or taking up trunk space really for that matter... Just make a nicely sealed off baffle and whatnot...
