Default port distance from rear hatch of suv. better to be close or farther?

In a subs up port back box in a Tahoe is performance enhanced by having the port extend to the rear hatch to load off? Or is it better to have distance?

ok, the reason I ask is because I'm planning on building an aero port box for either 3 or 4 15's and want to keep as much cargo room as I can. So I had an idea of maybe doing a slot port box with the box being as tall and close to the back seats as I can and running a port the whole width & length of the cargo floor about 4" high all the way to the rear hatch with a 45 degree angel slash cut up so it could bounce off the back hatch and blow up and around. This would give me plenty of room to place groceries and such in the back on top of the port when needed and was hoping it would enhance the loudness of the system. But if it made it sound like crap I wouldn't bother. I really need to get my computer fixed so I can post sketch up plans of what I'm trying to explain lol

In my suburban with 2 x18s, subs and port on same side of the 14 cube box, I got best meter numbers firing back and about 8" from the rear doors. I had to play with it a bit to find the sweet spot.

Thanks T, that probably means my idea wouldn't really benefit me since the whole idea was to extend the port all the way to the hatch with no real way of playing with distance. Well back to the drawing board....

It's supposed to be half the diameter of the port, give or take. On that note, my 10" aero port is about 10-14" away from the hatch depending on where you're measuring exactly. 01 Tahoe

Go with half the diameter of the aero away from the gate subs up and tune slightly higher than you want overall... port reactance due to the loading will give you lower actual tuning.

this is exactly what I was wondering. If using the rear hatch to load off would in effect help performance. I wanted to put the subs and enclosure as close to the back seat as possible and then instead of the port being inside the box make an external slot port that ran along the floor all the way to the rear hatch. Kinda like an "L" with the vertical part being the enclosure with subs up and the horizontal part of the "L" being the port. It would be the entire width (49") of the cargo area and about 4-5" high. Then at the end of the port I would slash cut it to a 45 or even a 30 degree angle like "\" so it could load off the rear hatch and blow up and over. Then I could use the top of the external port like the new floor of the cargo area for groceries or even mount batteries and such on top. Kinda a crazy looking box but was thinking it could give me cargo space while also increasing performance by having the port sound bounce off the rear hatch. And another twist was to make half of the port roof hinged so when I folded back the roof it in effect shortened port length and raise tuning. I really wish I could draw it out and show you guys but I'm stuck using a shitty window phone since my computers down.

Ports don't work like that, they don't "blow" any more than the cone of your woofers do. They push and pull air both directions. Staying at a flat to the hatch angle will allow them to load, if you do 30 or 45 it will allow it to unload and will be completely pointless... also, you don't want to do a full width narrow external port and use it as a false floor.... ports resonate, it is their job, therefore aNY thing you put on it will get clusterfuct and create bad sounds, not to mention be in danger of making its way into your enclosure and creating a whole new set of issues. Basically, following your plan will work as follows. 1. Super inefficient port that unloads against the back hatch and rattles whenever I have my groceries in there or any of the other crap that I try to put on it. 2. There is a very odd smell coming from the back, and I was missing g a banana a couple weeks ago after my trip to the grocery store. 3. It's basically less loud than the last build with more issues that I have to deal with. 4. I have determined it is time for a rebuild after 4 weeks....

You are welcome.
