Well, the "best" box for any app or sub is gonna be pretty subjective, but there is a ton of literature out there on subwoofer enclosures. Google it and see. I would start at the12volt.com and just start reading. Hell, even wikipedia has some decent info.

If you were looking for an actual page and binder book, then I hear this is a good read...Amazon.com: Designing, Building, and Testing Your Own Speaker System with Projects (9780070694293): David Weems: Books

I would buy a book called the Loud Speaker Design Cookbook by Vance Dickanson it has been considered as the Bible. It has everything in it you will ever need to know about building speakers enclosures of any type. sealed , vented , bandpass , rear loaded horns , transmission lines. It will have all the formula's you need to figure all these enclosure as well as there respective ports and explain how to test tune each design to get optimal preformance from it. There is a perfect box for every situation and every woofer this book will expain it all. you should be able to find this book online or check your local library they may have a copy availble to check out.

to be honest with you
modeling and stuff like that means nothing 99.99% of stuff is geared towards home audio not car audio
experience is your only friend

You will find this book very helpful. Having the knowledge and understanding how a loudspeaker is going to preform in a given enviroment is very important. You first need a goal , what do I want to achieve, emphasis on low bass , audible loudness , SQ... this book will help you pick the right subwoofer to meet your goal before you ever have to spend a dime. After you picked the woofer and made a prediction how its going to preform you then can move on to making an observation did it preform as predicted...If all your calculations where correct then yes it did exactly as predicted. If it didnt preform as predicted you will have the knowledge you need to do the actual testing to determine what went wrong and what needs to be changed... something will need to be changed , there are to many variables in cars to account for when designing a enclosure. It will require hours maybe days of in car testing to meet your design goal. like I said before this book is the Bible when it comes to designing and building loudspeakers.
