Default Box Efficiency

Ok, say I have 2 different subs

AQ SDC 12" that likes 2.5 cubes ported
DC Level 3 12" that likes 1.5 cubes ported

Wouldn't the SCD almost by default be louder because of the bigger box? Or am I missing something here?

Not that simple, have to factor sensitivity of the drivers and their needed airspace. If the Lvl 3 was a lower Qts and lower Vas it may have more enclosure gain and be louder, lots to figure on, TSP's/electromechanicals will dictate everything there.

Ok. I thought that might be the case but didn't know the technical side behind it.

The SDC's sound good but have a substantially higher Qts than the Lvl 3's, so you can count on lower extension with the SDC but smaller enclosure wants for the lvl 3. We ran an SDC 2.5 12 on 1100daily and it would pull 145.6dB consistently (headrest/termlab @ 34Hz) in 3.5 @ 33Hz the Lvl 3's wouldn't hold that kinda power and the low Qts has always thrown me off of them as a practical low end driver but I require lower extension and more flat response than most people lol. So, if you're looking to only reach into the upper 20Hz range and are satisfied with a +/- 4 to 5dB deviation in response the Lvl 3 will prob be more practical for you lol.

Total Driver Q, basically, the higher the Qts the lower the driver can naturally play with a near flat response but this is only true up to a point. Once youre above a Qts of .57-.6 the driver will have gain above Fs but extend well below Fs in it's optimum enclosure and with Q's that high or higher the transience of the driver is a little slower (muddier as some call it)

It takes a Qts of .4 to reach to Fs as the drivers vented F3 response, any lower than .4 and the driver will rely on box gain to reach an F3 of Fs. My personal favorite Qts is .47 which usually allows for ruler flat response from Fs to where-ever upper end roll-off begins.

For solid lows, the SDC should take the win, low Q drivers dont sound very natural or authoritative n the lower range. My HDC3-15A placed in 3.5 @ 28Hz still managed a 144.4 @ 24Hz in my Scion TC on an RD 3250V1 with stock electrical plus an 8D commercial in my back floorboard. The Response of the SDC and HDC3 were very similar but the SDC sounded much more natural thanks to a slightly lower Q

Ok thanks. That clears some things up a bit. I've had an HDC318 as well and it would dig low.

I have TSP's for the D2 I think if you'd want them to use in a box plot program, my tsp's for the 18 came from Sound_Around's Copper version after some break-in.
