Default Port distance from rear hatch

Now I've heard all sort of things about how for how far the port of a box should be away from a hatch, you know, some say the diameter of the port or half of the diameter of the port, but yet I've seen as little as 2 inches work and be crazy loud. So I'm wondering, how far? Say if I had a box that had 4 6" aeros at the bottom, how far away should it be from the rear hatch? 2", 4", 6", or what? Every inch closer I can make it, the more room I have else where. Vehicle is 03 Exploder.

The reason I ask is I'm probably squeezing 2 18"s in there, and need every inch I can get.

A good rule of thumb is to stay the diameter of the port away. This is a test & tune type thing though. I know when using 4" ports in my Explorer it didn't matter if they were 2" or 6" away the score didn't change. Rebuilt for 6" ports and they needed to be exactly 3" away to work correctly. Any more or less and my score dropped by 1.5db.
