Default Aero question

call me crazy but im stumped. ok so i know that for 2 3 inch aeros you do 3.14x3x3 to get 28.26 square inches of port area, but where i am confused is where does length come into play in this formula. because you should have more or less port area depending on the length. a 2 inch long 3"wide aero isnt going to have the same port area as say a 10" long 3" aero but using that formula you get the same answer. dont know where im losing this at. any light would be great thanks.

using length is just for displacement, surface area is surface area even if the tube is 2" long or 100' long

Area is 2 dimensional. It's just a cross section. It has nothing to do with length. Length is more for determining tuning.

For a 3" port, it's Pi * 1.5 squared. So actually for two it would be (3.14 * 1.5^2)2. That's closer to 14 sq in than the 28 that you stated.

You're confusing it with port volume., which you need to find net enclosure volume, but doesn't directly affect tuning.

so if i wanted to do 2 4" aeros or 1 6" aero in a 3 cubic ft enclosurewhich should i do

pi x3 squared=28.27, for a single 6" or pi x 2squared x2= 25.1

Yep. You got it now. I prefer one large port to multiple smaller ones, but sometimes it may work out better (or look better) with multiples. It depends on your subs and where you want your tune, but a single 6" in 3 cubes for 33hz (for example) would need to be 20".

You can go here and play with the port sizes and tuning.
