Are you talking real Birch or the Grade-C Birch Veneer Plywood Lowe's or Home Depot sells?

I personally like to use Arauco, Its dense, easy to work with, smells good lol Just great for overall use. I do use a Hardwood Sealer to seal all the pores and sand a lot to get a nice smooth surface.

I personally HATE MDF. Its just sawdust internally glued together.. that should say enough right there. It's not as easy to work with compared to a cabinet plywood. Screws don't hold well in it. It chips apart easily. Need I say more?

Below here is a lil information on Arauco.

AraucoPly - ARAUCO

Hope this helpful.

Acoustically there is no discernable difference so it just comes down to what you want to spend, if you care about weight, etc. I only use birch for my daily builds. For my competition stuff I use ac ply. It's basically cabinet grade plywood. Still as light as birch (almost) but costs less than mdf. The plys just aren't laminated that great.

If price is an issue, get mdf. If weight is an issue, get birch. If weight and price is an issue, get ac ply.

AS far as working with both, they both have their good points and bad. I f'n hate how mdf splits and seems so weak, but it's a breeze to shape/router/sand. And if you are going to go with wood glue and clamps, this isn't an issue. I love the strength of birch and you can really get a bite on it with screws, but it's a little tougher to smooth.

birch is not as dense as mdf but the weight the durability trumps the little not noticeable density the difference in cost for the homedepot is roughly 10 dollars but I had mdf boxs strip flex and one time I kicked a hole through a old mdf box.I still have a birch wood box built by mistrass that was made for audioque hd thats right a hd I put soundstream xxx 15s in it t3 tsns 15s in it image dynamic spl 15 in it sold it bought it back it's been in and out of 6 trunks in my possession I'm estimating its 6-8 years old and it still is strong and has it's integrity.

Im pretty sure the plys are all the same thickness so having more plys would mean a thicker sheet of wood (say 8 ply is 1/2" then 13 ply would roughly be 3/4").
