Default port length: horizontal vs. vertical

im building an new box, and im doing a horizontal port across the top of it, i want the port tuned to 30hz

my question si, why does the length of the port change so much depending if im doing a horizontal port opposed to a vertical port

the numbers are the same, so shouldn't the length stay constant

for example, my port is 4.25" high by 42.5" wide, i want a 28hz tuning, and it gives me a length of 44",

but if i reverse the numbers for a vertical port, the length is now 24"

why is this

John

Technically, it shouldn't matter. What calculator are you using?

There is a height to width ratio that you shouldn't exceed, but I don't know what that ratio is off the top of my head. Example: your port has a 10:1 width to height ratio. With that much disparity between the two, it'll effect the tune. Maybe the calculator you are using knows this?

Edit: I just saw that you said if you just reverse the two that it's causing that length difference. One calculator I've used did that to me. The one on the12volt doesn't care how tall or wide it is.

it shouldn't matter as long as the area of the port is so many sq. in per cu. ft. Like near 15 sq in per cu ft. So 3.5 cu ft it should be 52.5 sq inches of port area the length will determine the freq.

I'm sure he knows this, bro. He was asking why he's getting different lengths for the same port area if he swaps the height and width.

One calc says 8:1 max, another says 10.1 max

is there a definative ratio or is it more trial and error

Treat as if the height is the larger dimension and the width the smaller.

It doesnt matter. The only thing they ask for height/width for is port area. Your calc sucks, bro.
The general rule Ive seen is 9:1 which is common. I wouldnt go that high if you dont need to. Normally at that point, center slots or aeros are put to good use.
