Default Reviving an old dinosaur! MTX RFL!

So I got an RFL in the other day for a customer... I haven't seen one of these in probably 6-7 years now!

If you've never seen one, they were made for SPL use only, for members of Team Thundeforce, then sold in stores as well.

They had one of the tightest gaps and stiffest suspensions of any other sub made at the time. Heck, even now, the suspension is just retardely stiff!

They were made to be field reconed, so the spiders bolted down with allen bolts, as did the surround. The spiders were mounted to an aluminum disc, and the surround sat on top of the basket, then had a ring bolted over it to clamp it in place.

The spiders were 8.5" from the factory, but they were laminated together, making them super stiff, and limiting excursion to a measly inch or so without 10kw of power! These were made for Super Street and Extreme DB Drag vehicles, so 65hz and up was the goal! Sucks for daily use though...

We decided to go back with 8" spiders, so I epoxied in an adapter ring to give a good landing to mount the spiders to. These will move quite a bit farther than the originals!

We used an 8 layer extended length flatwound coil in it. The gap is so tight that I was VERY worried about mechanical noise. Check out the spacer I used - 1 sheet of copy paper!

Here it is with the spiders all glued in place onto the ring.

We re-used the stock terminals by adding in some tabs to solder to. Then we heatshrunk the leads because of the long distance across the metal basket.

The sticker on the magnets was all messes up, so I added some custom PSI insta-boot to the magnets! Much better than before.

Here's the cone being clamped on. I used glue here anyway, as there's no chance of it being field reconed anymore.

Now the dustcap!

About .005" on the inside and around .015" on the outside.
