Default Opinion needed

Dave, I'm experiencing some audible distortion from the dustcap on my DMX. The DC isn't supported in the middle and at higher frequencies it makes an annoying popping sound. I'm wondering how I can rectify that, would you suggest getting a thin foam sheet and attaching it to the dustcap to dampen it? Felt circles? The fuzzy part of Velcro?

At low frequencies it's awesome, it moves the car quite nicely, I didn't discover the popping/slapping sound until I played "Time" by Pink Floyd. If you're familiar with the song the sound kicks in after the chimes stop and the bass line starts. I've run into it with some kick drums too.

I'm trying to come up with a solution that won't involve me pulling the sub. I'm asking you because of your background with making subs and all. I think the DC is distorting due to it resonating at higher frequencies so I'm thinking that damping material will be the best bet but I don't want to add a bunch of weight to the cone either.

Any options you can come up with would be much appreciated.

what is you crossover set at?
might set it a bit lower, i know what you mean, i heard the same thing on a friends setup, we got rid of the problem with setting the crossover from 100 down to 80hz / 18db

i know it's no real solution to the problem, but it helps if you don't want to do anything to the sub...

It's at 50hz right now, had been at 60hz. I'm using the crossover on the head (12db/octave) and the crossover on the amp set to around 75hz to bring it to about 18db/octave (the amp is also 12db/octave).

Matt,
It's going to be hard to repair it without removing it from the enclosure. It's just very hard to re-glue the cap on without being able to spin or move the sub around as you need.

It happens sometimes, it really depends on the sub, power, enclosure, and sometimes even the actual cap itself. Sometimes they're just weak due to very slight variances in the thickness of the material.

What do I think you should do?:
I would gripe at the guy who supplied the dustcap to you... j/k

Tell ya what, live with the noise for a couple of days and I'll send you a little kit to fix 'er right on up!

Same address yea?

Yeah same address but the cap hasn't come unglued, it's still firmly attached. What about a boob style cap?

Let's go back with the same style. The surround will be all messed up anyway after you remove the cap. Shouldnt look too pretty where it was glued down before...

I have an inner air cap piece and a new outer cap shipping to you asap.
