I had a '73 GP when I was a young 'un and it had a super loud exhaust on it and I kept trying to get my system to get louder than my pipes, I eventually gave up.

I'd much, much rather have a quiet car and a middling loud system than a loud car and insanely loud system. After music gets too loud you can't hear it properly.

it just so I can discuss this here instead of thundras thread basically
the way I see it you have a head ache right how in the hell do you turn your exhaust down?
exhaust at high levels is way more damaging to your hearing as it has higher and dirty waves (ie distorted sound)
now I don't like stock exhaust but a straight pipe imo sounds like crap it has no fluidity to the sound just harsh loudness and drones horribly. I have had 2 trucks that were straight piped 1996 f-150 that is mine and a 2006 silverado 2500 6.0 I drove for work bith at 55 would drone so horibly it would drive you nuts. On the other hand my 1998 cobra and 2001 ws6 both had headers and offroad pipes and bullet mufflers (not glasspacks) and they sounded awesome both were still loud and got plenty of attention but wern't so loud it pissed everybody off and it sounded much better than straight pipes did (and the 2006 and the trans am have the same series motors)
now with a system you can turn it down when needed. change the sound to what you like and has no effects on the environment

I prefer exhaust. I only have the stereo on when I'm on a highway or something like that. In town I keep the stereo very low or off because I like to hear my exhaust and what is going on around me.

If you don't want to hear the exhaust so much just keep your foot off the gas. I can drive around all day with the blazer fairly quiet if I want to.

If done right straight pipes sound just as good as a muffler IMHO.

And how can your exhaust have effects on the "envirenment"?

My GP didn't have a high pitched exhaust. At idle it was probably in the region of 50hz with deeper undertones. At wide open throttle the carb made so much noise it was hard to identify which was louder... unless I was running on open headers.

Of course when you have cylinders that are as big as two pound coffee cans it's going to have a lower note.

that alone I know you know the answer
you used to be a mechanic you know what a cat does
and my cars are not quiet when you let off the gas my t/a would shake the mirrors at idle and when my pickup had open headers you couldn't even think with it running

I ran my pickup on open headers it sucked as a dd
and the note isn't the biggest thing it's that the sound is distorted
I'm pretty sure you know distortion hurts your hearing more than clean sound
