Default Front wheel alignment: am I gonna get screwed?

For those with lotsa weight in the back: did it screw up your front end alignment? My front tires are wearing on the outside pretty bad and I need to take it in. Just want to be prepared if the guys at the shop try to tell me they need to tack on extra services because of the wall. It's "only" 600 extra pounds or so back there, and my rear tires have normal tread wear.

Car's a 2000 Neon.

How often do you rotate your tires? Do you take turns fast?

In lamen's term's, yes you're gonna get screwed. every alignment shop will try to tell you that you need certain parts replaced, like tie rod ends, etc. Often, they claim that they won't be able to do the alignment unless you have the parts fixed, which is a few hundred extra bucks. I just had mine done a few months ago and actually needed both tie rod ends replaced, which was $400 bucks on it's own.

There's a tire shop by my house that offers lifetime alignment. Call around and see if anyone offers something like that. I mean, it's like $250 or something, but totally worth it. I think tire rotation is included also.

The weight of the wall did not cause the outside of your tires to wear unevenly vs the inside.

The added weight probably sped up the wear you were already experiencing.

basically, the problem you have is a matter of 'toe in' meaning the front tires are pointed too much together. This can not happen by worn parts or additional weight so they should not need any additional parts to correct it. Your alignment should cost less than $100 at a respectable alignment shop.

I'm not sure if it applies because of the weight of the wall but I know limos have to be aligned when loaded because the front lifts and causes the alignment to change when full. (Which is the only time they're on the road.)

If you didn't have an alignment after building the wall it could change the alignment some.

Around $100 is the average around here, but many shops are crooked and will try to sell you parts you don't need. Just get it checked at another shop you trust, even if they don't align cars, bad suspensions parts are easy to check.

Ahhh..that makes sense.

I don't think I've ever had an alignment done. I hate taking my car to shops. When I get new tires I take the rims off and bring them in, lol. I'm not too knowledgeable on suspensions though so I want to prepare myself before I get there. Thanks everyone.
