Default DIY auto tint: who's done it?!

How difficult was it? Did you remove the old tint too? I got some purple tint that I'm thinking of redoing with new tint I bought. Just thought I'd ask to see how your experience was. Or just have someone do it and pay them.

I've done it many times.
The flatter your windows the easier it is.
Heat gun is a necessity for good results.
You tube vids will explain the process pretty well.
Wet application is easier to start with powder method requires much more finesse.
Yes, remove remove old tint for best results. A fine steel wool and glass cleaner works good on windows without defroster lines, you have to use a glue remover if the window has defroster (the removal is a PITA)
Once you have done a few curved windows it becomes much easier...

I usually order from concord window films, the metalized heat shrinks easy and resists fading quite well.
IIRC they will send you sample pieces so you can see the different styles.
Just stay away from the cheapest unless car is garage kept, it'll fade in a few years.

As I just remembered, I tried it once years ago... and it was a little windy outside. Big mistake!! I think I may try to attempt it again. Start with my rear window. Then see how it goes from there.

Wind is an absolute no-go.
Clean outside of car and be meticulous about the inside windows and any trim bordering them.
Large sheets are a 2 person job after peeling the liner, but Tahoe windows shouldn't be that hard. Try an older rx-7 or vette rear window for a frustrating experience!

Use gila peel and cling from autozone. $12 a roll.

Anyone who doesn't like it, has never used it.

Just wash it with soap and water, rinse, put more soapy water on one side, then apply to the window and use a credit card to get bubbles out - wet the inside too to make it easier to squeeze bubbles out or you might cause cracks if the window is warm from the sun.

It peels right off if you don't get it right, and you can move it while it's on the window. Cut AFTER you have placed it and squeezed the bubbles out.

Trust me, buy a pack. You won't regret it, and you will never use other window tint again.

I can't find the 5% online, but I called autozone last week and they said they have it and still carry it. I'm sure you can find some locally.

I like Black Magic tint from Wal-Mart. Its really nice

I have tinted a lot of vehicles.

I use dish soap/water as the tint lubricant.

is very important to clean the windows before you tint them.

Gila makes a tint-off kit for removing old tint.

I have cleaned old tint glue off with gas/acetone and a razor also.
