Default Some mechanics are stupid.....

So my wife has a 05 cobalt base 2.2L
the other day the car died, she started it right back up.
next day died, started right back up.
took it to the dealer for diagnostic.

they said the icm was bad, which it did go bad 3 years ago, then a year later so 2 years ago. now this would be number 3.
i didnt read the code this time, but its always been a p0300 (random/multiple misfire) I dont know the count or which cylinder but the tech said he saw the issue when he got the car to stall.
he said the icm went bad because 5 years ago she put different plugs in than the gm recomended. and the plugs were sending too much voltage to the icm. for 4 plugs, 4 plug boots, and the icm he said it would be $1500.....

Im not totally sure what plugs are in the car as she is still driving it but is this guy just blowing smoke up my ass or is he on to something with the plugs?

I will replace all plugs (with gm spec ones, the boots, and the icm when the parts come in.)

i read in other topics that the icm is very picky in the cobalts but 3 in 3 years is rediculous!

any help would be very helpfull

the ICM a very common issue for cobalts since the icm is in a HOT location (right on the motor). I believe the new design is coil on plug vs separate component (pack)

the "wrong plugs" is BS

Blowing smoke is my take. Plugs shouldn't make a difference.

He's blowing smoke up your ass. my girlfriend had a 2005 cobalt and Her transmission started shifting hard out of 2. Everyone thought it was the transmission. I scanned it and looked at possible causes. Transmission was a possible cause but I started with the easiest cheapest fix which was a 10amp fuse that controlled the transmission. 25 cents saved me 1200.

Get another person to look at it. Dealerships are crooks.

I've seen where if you take a car designed to use platinum plugs and put coppers in it it will run like crap. Always use what came stock in it or better. If I came with platinum, use that, double platinum or iridium.

As for your problem I would have to see it myself to give you a diagnosis.

i bought oem iridiums
and a new icm and new boots
grand total $120 with 2 day shipping!
its not alot of work and the parts are not that much.
its honestly a $300 job at most.
i know because i paid to have both other icms changed at around $200 each (thankfully the 2 year warrenty covered the first part)
its just hard to diagnose because its intermitent and a cylinder missfire could be soooo many things!
unless you can see it happening with a computer you wont find it.

My friends a mechanic and he drove it for a week before it acted up on him. His monitor caught it and he fixed it that day.

and not too many people care about cobalts on cobalt forums. its all about da SS!!!!
