Default Cheap Lightweight RWD cars.

Anyone else a fan? I saw some vintage racing at Laguna Seca yesterday on Speed, and it reminded me of how much I love watching road races. Also reminded me how much I need to get back up to Mid-Ohio, which is only a couple hours up the road...

So, anyone else like Road Racing/Endurance racing?

Love it we used to go watch the NASA races in Colorado all the time. Still love to watch the British Touring Car races on speed. I have always wanted to try it but just have never had the money or time.

That's kinda why I posted this thread. I saw some racing yesterday, and it reminded me of my love of it, and I kinda want to get into it, but audioz are taking all my money... That, and spec miata (supposed to be one of the cheapest classes of professional racing) is like a $15k car... But I might have to look into some autocross/smaller events. I was lookin at Redline Time Attack rules the other day, and the class setups are so screwed up. 4 classes: Stock, Street, Modified, Unlimited. Stock, pretty obvious. Street is basic setups: 2 way dampening suspension, no electronic suspension, no active bodywork, 1 major engine mod (swap, fi, built NA, etc. but no combination of the 2). Modified is no wings above the roofline, and no dog-boxes and that's about it. Then Unlimited is basically free rules.

What are some of the other organizations to look into? I'm thinking about grabbin a Miata whenever I can find the cash, and just getting it safe for the track and then getting my driving skills up. Mid Ohio is right up the road, and it's supposed to be a tough course, so to learn on that would help, I'd think.

I looked through the NASA rules last night, and I like the way it's setup. I'll have to look more in depth at it. Kinda sucks that any engine swaps have to be checked out on an individual basis, but I guess it keeps it fair that way...

So, back to this. I'm looking for a new project car. Goal is to be under 2500lbs when finished with a minimum of 250hp/250tq (power to weight ratio of at least .1). Car must be RWD (engine placement not all that important, but FR seems easiest) and must be a manual transmission. Total cost should be at or below $15k. Yes, I know I can buy something like a C5 vette for that money and have a decently fast car, but 1. it's a vette and I'm a 20 year old kid so insurance basically wouldn't happen and 2. it'd just be stock and that's no fun...

So my question becomes, what cars are capable of such things? weight < 2500lbs (less is better), hp/tq numbers at least 250 each (possibly even 350 each), RWD, manual transmission, and total cost ~$15k. Here are a list of possible cars I've come up with:

1st Gen Toyota Celica (currently my favorite, for it's looks and ~1900lb weight and availability)
Porsche 914 - damn near impossible to find for less than ~$8k in decent shape
Miata - (even with a V8, it's still a Miata though)
Chevette/Pinto - I'm not too big on those.
Mazda RX-4 - not a big rotary fan, but a 13b would be sick in one of these. I heard about a guy using one for SCCA and destroying everyone, but the motor had a shitload of work in it, and he kept blowing up transmissions.

Any others I'm missing?

I'm trying to avoid all the usual cars that are built up by everyone and their brothers. Hence why the 240/180/silvia is not on the list. That, and the drifting craze has driven the cost of those cars up like no other...
