Default 4x4 help guys.

I think I've got the bug to get back into offroading. I watched a couple clips that made me really miss it. I've been looking into a 1988-1993 Range Rover. I'd love to find a non running shell and rebuild. I'll be in Germany so I think I can find a diesel RR pretty easily.

I'd want to rebuild it from the ground up to handle a trip around the world.
-drop in a new engine, probably turbo diesel.
-reliable tranny
-some form of lift?
-roll cage
-anything else that would be needed.

Anyone have input on such a build?

Thanks,
Alex

There is a guy down the street from me that has like 10 of them. Great trucks but parts in America for them can get pricey. I think over seas having a diesel would be bad ass.

LOTS of good info over on this site ( Land Rover - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board ) for RR and LR. The one above is on 38.5's and is still very reliable according to the owner. I'm an avid off roader but my knowledge of Rovers is limited.

try to find a 2.5l
12, 13, 14, or 15J code engine

if you want something a little newer with a little more power
19J

horsepower is going to be around 15hp more but what matters is the torgue you would gain about 35 or so ft lbs. being a newer engine though may cost more and might require a little more to get it to work.

Ya I'd prefer to use an existing engine but I could build one if necessary. I'd like to get the strongest turbo diesel I can fit in there..I'm a torque fan. I already posted up on 1 LR forum, but I'll check out the Pirate one soon.

those engines shouldnt be to hard to find. the 12-15J engines were used in military and fleet vehicles so they should be all over. as well as marine use. id think in europe you could pick one up for next to nothing. the transmission would be easy since you could use either behind it. by that i mean one from a gas or a diesel engine. doesnt have to be specific.

Ok great, I'll definitely look around once I get there. How about lifts? I know very little about them.
