Default anyone familiar with torque converters???

Car is a 2001 malibu and the check engine light came on and it is telling me that its stuck "off". anyone know what i can check before we have to send it off?? Never messed around with an automatic before so i don't know a whole lot about them except they are expensive to repair.

Its probably talking about the lockup clutch. I dont know about that specific car its electronically controled and I really dont know what would make it not lockup. It could be the TPS or another sensor. Otherwise you need a new torque converter. Were there any other codes that popped up? Driving it the way it is wont hurt anything except your gas mileage. It will only lockup in OD anyways....

Take the negative battery cable loose for at least 1 min, sometimes it will reset the engine diagnostic system.

Its my moms car and she said nothing is out of the norm when it comes to drivability. Knew there were sensors and such that help the torque converter to function just not forsure were to start and the chevy forum i joined is slow going in the help.

if your talking about erasing the code i have a code reader that can do that, but it doesn't really solve the problem.

Disconecting the negative cable will essentially reset the ecm. This may help if your computer is having a brain fart. Otherwise your light will come right back on. But its worth a shot.

Yea like i said before the only time the convertor locks up is in overdrive. Its not hurting anything except for gas mileage.
