Default Could you guys help me out with my truck.

I took my truck to a mechanic and he told me the whole bottom end is gone on my engine. Said it would be cheaper to find a used engine and just do a swap.

What parts would I need to just rebuild the bottom end? Would it actually be cheaper to do then a whole engine swap? Cost about $1400 CDN total for a used engine shipped to me.

What should I do?

The parts to rebuild would be cheaper if you can rebuild it yourself, but after labor fees it will be better for you to buy a good used block. Just make sure you know details on the used block before buying.

Well that's where that used engine is from lol. A big junkyard like 8 hours away from me. Nothing good in my city. I checked and one junkyard said they had a engine and said $800 for it. Has like 150,000+ kms on it lol. More then my truck's engine that's wrecked.

What happened to your truck to make you take it to them for them to tell you the bottom end is bad?

What kind of truck?

What engine?

It's a 1991 Chevy 1500 Cheyenne. 4.3L V6. 2wd. auto.

I took it in because it leaks a ton of oil. And u hear a loud knocking sound.

rebuilding an engine is a very tedious process if you haven't done it before,... Not to discourage you from going that route, but a simple miscalculation can ruin the whole project.

seeing that you would need to pull the block from the engine bay either way, it would be better to just get the running, used engine ans save yourself the hassle of all the work you would
need to put into replacing pistons, rods, crank, bearings, oil sending unit and gaskets (head, intake, water pump, oil pan)

at least with a used running engine, there is less of a chance with things going awry.

Here's what you do.

Take the radiator cap off, pull a new truck under it and put it back on.

You now have a good, running truck.

yea I'm just thinking if I should do a v6 to v8 350 swap. Guy said he had a chevy 350 and he would install it and the total cost would be like $1200 around there. But I would probably rather the v6 for gas mileage. Dunno if it's worth it fixing. Since I have a car. But this could be my winter / daily driver. Body is in good condition and has new tires and exhaust.
