Default Screaming Alternator...Problem?

When I start my car, my alternator lets out a lets out a little scream. I really high pitch squeal that sounds like nail on a chalkboard. It is only for a second or 2, and it doesnt happen while I am driving, only starting. It is worse if the car has been sitting for a longer time. I opened the hood and did it and it came from the alt for sure, it was almost like it can't spin as fast at first. It does have a broken plastic cap on it. problem?

sounds like maybe you've got low voltage and then the alt squeals when it first starts up.

Next time you do it check voltage on your batteries before you start the car and see what its sitting at...

My old truck would do that when I just had 1 alt on it with all 8 amps...after I burped the voltage would get low and the alt would start squealing...i don't have a technical reason lol

Okay, now the engine temperature is going up. My girlfriend said this happened to her car and it might be the tranny.

You would know if your tranny was going my friend. The only reason I can see a engine temp rise from a transmission issue, is if the tranny was not shifting causing higher than normal rpms for extended times.

Hmmmm.

Try taking your belt off, and see if you can turn everything by hand.

If one is abnormally hard to turn then that might be your problem and the squeal is just your belt slipping a little until it warms up or finally catches good enough to turn whatever is freezing up.

Sounds in cars can be tricky, just because it sounds like it is coming from the alt doesn't mean that really is where it is coming from. I'm thinking maybe your water pump is going out and the belt is slipping on it when it is cold, and since the pump is going out that is letting the temp go up.

Don't run out and buy a water pump because I said that, you still wanna try everything and make sure that is what it is. That is just what I think it could be.

Also you can try taking your belt off and starting it up without the belt and see if it still squeals.

x2 on the water pump just see if it gets really hot at idle and also check the fluid level if you are loosing coolant and not leaking any on the ground then it's going in the oil (which isn't good) It sounds like your belt is slipping like mentioned before so make sure the water pump pulley spins easily
