Default Trying to fix my sisters strut...help plz.

I've never changed a spring on a strut before, but I know you gotta be careful. Is there a tool you can rent from advance auto, or somewhere to decompress the spring on the strut? I'm going to change her wheel bearing, and spring this weekend so she doesn't have to spend $750 to do it, but I don't wanna take a finger off in the process. My other thought was to just take the whole strut to the auto shop and have them swap the springs out... It would probably take them 10 minutes, and save me a lot of hassle, what do you think I should do? She said the spring is "broken" whatever that means.

Places do rent spring compressors but honestly it sounds like you lack experience and with this heat wave its not the best time to learn. Shop around for a good price or someone that does work on the side it will definitely be worth the extra coin not worrying about the BS in this heat

Funny, I am installing my strut/springs for the rear of my Impala this weekend. I bought the quick strut assembly off ebay, 180 for the pair. Bolts right on, no spring compressor needed.

‪How To Replace Struts In Your Car.‬‏ - YouTube

Its not really all that hard to do, but can be quite time consuming if you have never done it before. And if you're changing one side you might as well change the other... coil springs are sold in pairs anyway.

Advance auto and Autozone rent them for around $40 i believe, but you get the $40 back when you bring back the compressors

you can rent a strut spring compressor from any advance auto or auto zone. just make sure you got the spring fully compressed before you remove the top bearing plate. or take the strut off and take it to a local shop and see if they will change the spring for you. the spring compressor most shops use is way safer then anything you can rent.

Go to autozone or oriellys and ask for a macphearson strut spring compressor. If you ask for a regular spring compressor the give you a realtime confusing one. This one is really simple to use.

This is the safest way to do it. The cost will be much lower than if they do the entire removal. Spring compressors are available from auto parts stores but they are nowhere near the quality of a wall mounted spring press. The compressor that you can rent is basically a big screw with hooks at the ends. If you don't have it set up right the feet slip easily and you can hurt yourself. There's a lot of tension on the compressed spring and if you're not experienced with it you should just bring the assembly to a reputable shop. A fair price is half an hours labor. In my area that's around 50-60 bucks
