Thumbs up Box Building Help/Tips

Alright, I am getting ready to make my first official box and before I do it I would like some tips. I haven't found any threads like this yet, so I figured I would make one. I will try to edit the best answers back into this post for future viewers.

  1. How many screws should I use? I've heard that you can't use too many and I've heard not to use too many/too close because it will split the wood. I plan on pre-drilling all the holes though.
Answer: Screws are only clamps until the glue dries - Pre-drill them if you do use them.
  2. Titebond II seems to be what everyone prefers for glue. Would 32oz be enough? I will go over-kill on it. The box will be roughly 7.5~8.5 cubic feet.
    Answer: Titebond II ftw
  3. I plan on getting 2 sheets of 1/2" MDF wood. And doubling the top of the box which the subs sit on, correct?
    Answer: Use 3/4" instead
  4. 45's in the corners? Does that really help? If so, would I have to cut out a triangle to fit there or just a piece of wood cut in a 45 degree angle?
    Answer: Yes to 45's
  5. I've also heard of people using resin on the inside of the box? Does that really benefit? I don't plan on competing, just a daily system.

    Questions about the box size/port:
  6. How big of a box should I build with 2 15" IA Lethal Injections? It will be running off of a Hifonics Brutus BRZ 2100.1 so it will see about 700 watts per sub. I just need cubic feet, I believe I have around 8.5 cubic feet, or more to play around with before all the displacements.
  7. How much port should I use? I plan on using wood for the port(slot port) instead of aero port. I want it to kill the lows, but I've heard that this sub isn't the best for that. 32 Hertz?
  8. It is a trunk system (Grand Prix GTP), so should I do subs up, port back?

Thanks,

Kyle

Get 3/4" MDF
Titebond II FTW!!!
Get some right angle clamps
Get at least two 36" vice clamps
Measure 5 times cut 1 time
For the 45's just get a piece of MDF and cut it long ways with the blade at a 45* angle no need for a triangle
Resin makes everything smoother with ample sanding
Get some wooden dowels or al threading for bracing
Only put 45's on the "power" corners
If you want to make it pretty get a 3/8" router bit for all edges
Use 3/8" router bit on inner port wall where possible to help air flow
Also roundover port opening to help prevent port noise

BTW I don't use screws in my boxes because they are just clamps until the glue dries... May save you some time and frustration

I would use screws for sure....

3/4" mdf for sure, if you want to splurge get some 3/4" birch plywood. A 4x8 sheet can be had for like $35-$45

I've got all the necessary tools, my shop has just about every tool possible.

What exactly are "power curves"?

How would I brace it using dowel rods?

Would I need 2 sheets of mdf? Because that'll cost me around $78 for 2 sheets and the wood glue.

I think the power corners are the ones that are not along the top/baffle...

To brace just cut the dowel to the inner height of the box and secure using glue and two screws.

2 15s in a GTP? This should be a nice one to follow... be sure to make a build log. I have an '00 GT coupe myself.

I'll be sure to show pictures along the way. I've already got all the wires ran though. I didn't bother taking pictures of that.

Anyone else want to help me answer these questions? I'd really like some experienced box builder's opinions.
