Default where do I start for building?

I want to start building subs, it's an idea I've had for a long time before I even owned my first set of reconed "custom" 12's
I've seen some stuff online and for sale around here but I wanna get my hands on some quality products

I dont necessarily wanna start building and marketing them but I would like to have the ability to order up parts and build my own setups and maybe a few friends when they wanna pay for some nice subs

so like I said I see stuff on here, and I see some stuff online, such as RU's subs and the links they post to buy everything individually that they use
but I wanna be able to build me something along the lines of a 1k RMS 15
Just do my own first "prototype" to run off of a T1000 in my jeep
And see how it handles

I'll be doing more research on the fundamentals of building, how to "properly" re cone and learning some ins and outs
But whatever you guys can provide as where to start or where to look at individual pieces to start buying is appreciated

I was thinking along the lines of a 12 spoke basket with 3' or bigger coils, some top name motor like diamond or sundown or anything really
I mean this is my chance to go crazy but like always money is a factor
So above crazy might be off limits for now =)

so... have you built a sub yet ?

some say its pretty easy, others just make it look easy !!

do you have to separate the basket from the motor ?

for example an obsidian drop in, should be able to just clean it up an "drop it in"

I've been looking into the same thing OP...for parts that are new (not from a member if it makes you feel better about them) try PSI's site...

I'm still learning quite a bit myself as I just got into higher end audio this year (March of '11 actually) and I'm learning a chit ton from this site...building subs and enclosure designs are next on my agenda

Definately start with something that is affordable. Buy a motor and basket out of either the speaker parts section or the broken and non working section. Find something that is easy to get parts for and not too expensive. Honestly building a sub is extremely easy if you're using stock parts and drop ins. Getting custom is a bit more difficult. Like custom coils, spider packs, etc getting everything just right so you don't have issues with coil rub and with the spiders not being strong enough. Putting a quality coil that will take plenty of power and then getting a spider pack that can't handle the power. It's like getting a chevy 350 with a dodge transmission. Great under the hood but the tranny can't handle it so the coil is wasted. Also an improper spider pack for too heavy of a cone. Before you know it you have no cone control or sagging of the suspension because it's overworked. Start with something cheap. I'll find you something and pm you and feel free to P.M me if you'd like if you have questions.

Car Audio Classifieds
It's not a 3 inch coil but a great start because they are affordable. Roughly 125 bucks for the 12 and 140 total for the 15 I'd say. And reconing is sooo simple after your first time you'll breeze. I don't suggest reconing 8's as a start. It sounds easy since they are so small but I'd rather recone an 18 any day than an 8.
