from what i heard is that its really only used with ported sub boxes so the sub will not bottom out on itself.

If you mean the subsonic filter it filters out low bass notes if you have a ported enclosure set it around 25hz/30hz depending on your box tuning. For a large to medium sealed box 20hz, a small sealed you can set it much lower or turn it off. This is just a guide line the filter protects your subs from over excursion.

For a sealed box, they're not required. The subs have a natural roll off according to their frequency response and the airspace of the chambers within the enclosure. For vented/ported boxes, setting the subsonic filter below the box's port tuned frequency increases your chances for unloading, where the subs have little to no control and things start getting very smelly. If your equipment has an accurate crossover, then you should be able to tell pretty quickly while tuning. Hope this helps.
