Default Do I Need A Capacitor?

I purchased a PA 880 amplifier, 2 12'' DB subs (single voice coil), and a box all from Polk Audio in September. My subs hit pretty hard and the amp powers them well but the lights have always dimmed slightly when they go off at night.

Now tomorrow I am purchasing 2 12'' P3 (Punch series & dual voice coil) from Rockford Fosgate. The person I am buying them from tried running them in his geo with a 2600 watt amp and fried his alternator and ended up scrapping the car. So needing money, hes selling them to me for $150.

I have a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500 pick-up truck and my question is should I buy a capacitor before plugging the P3s into my PA 880 amplifier, or should I just go ahead and do it worry free?

Lame.. [that is soo yesterday.]

----------------------------------------------------------

OP, buy wire first and a larger battery second. capacitors are not junk but the automotive power supply capacitors you can fit your vehicle are not large enough to do any good. Basically, caps are junk.{even when they are new, they are junk}

wire.. buy good/real/OFC wire first.

battery.. buy something twice as good as you have now. and buy it new with a good warranty. it's a good investment.

Come on. This aint that "other" forum.

OP, there is a ton of info on why caps aren't a great idea for a daily system. Especially since a decent battery is around the same price.

And it's not the subd that are causing lights to dim. It's the amperage draw from the amplifier. Your truck has a pretty stout stock alt so, if you're having dimming issues, search the "big 3" and find a little CA oriented batt and you'll be all set.

capacitors will not help you in car audio

that is only a 400wrms amp and 2ohm stable so make sure you wire the p3's up to 2ohm or 4ohm (which will only give about 250wrms. if you had the polk subs wired to 2ohm and set the gain properly on the amp, you got as much as the amp could give out and switching subs wont draw more if still set properly at 2ohm.
if you do have problems look into the big 3 upgrade, a larger battery, second battery, or high output alternator (any can be found with the search tool, or going into the tutorial section.) there is also a great write up on why you dont need a capacitor for a daily driver.

wow i must be a slow typer
