Default Mechman 14v video- winching in action!

Last weekend the Mechman Jeep had to pull a full-size Blazer up a muddy obstacle. Temps in the 20's, wet ground don't make for a lot of fun when you are stuck, but the 14v batteries with the 270a Mechman alternator power this Smittybilt 8k winch quite well.

Check out the video to see what this is all about-

So who here wants 14v power?

I've been considering going to that on mine, but I just don't know how well the factory electronics will take it, or if they will at all.

i think you would have to run a step down module at that point charging at 16+ most factory electrical dont like anything much over in the 15s

Not necessarily. A lot of them are fine up to about 16, but for 14v batteries you need to charge in the 16.4-16.8 range. Some of them are completely fine at well over 16 too. It's different from vehicle to vehicle, and what usually happens if anything, is it sends the modules haywire. I've been meaning to either get with Nathan at XS, or call Mechman, and see if they've tried it on a truck like mine yet to see what they say.

There's only 2 issues I have found on all the vehicles we have run on 14v batteries here.

One is the AFTERMARKET components like HU's, amps, and other electronics need to be rated to handle the 15.8-16.4v charging.

The other is you may get a warning light or gauge peg because the factory charging voltage limits have been exceeded.

I have 4 vehicles:

1993 Ford Mustang (Drag car)
1989 Chevy pickup w/ 92 corvette LT1 swapped into it
1999 Chevy Silverado 6.0L
1997 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L (soon to be 5.3L chevy powered)

All four of them run perfectly at 16.8 volts daily w/ 14 volt batteries. The only issue I have had with any of them is that the 97 jeep "check gauges" light comes on in the dash.

What worries me on mine, is it's a 2011 Ranger. I don't know for sure how it's going to react to it. I'm sure it'll be fine, but I just haven't heard of or know of anyone with one of the newer Ranger's running 14 volt setups.
