Default Amp Heartbeat?

So I just got a new amp yesterday from cl and had it demoed to me. It was doing just fine with him. The amp is a avionixx axt 800.2. I hooked it up late last night and played with it a lil bit. Right away I noticed there was loud thumps, like a heart beat. After messing with it, I figured out it really only happens when there is no signal to amp(no bass playing). But it doesnt ALWAYS happen, just frequently. I havent changed anything from my last set up to this one. Anyone ever have this happen? I'm confused as to where to even start. Tomorrow I am going to go over all my wiring. I don't think it is a ground issue as I am grounded straight to my battery(battery is in the back of the trunk). I drive a Saturn Ion2.

Thanks for any help.

I've seen amplifiers do that. Usually it means the gain is set too high.

Really? Weird. Let me go try to turn it down. It is around the 11 o'clock position.

Never set your gains by physical position. That's a good way to release magic smoke from electronics.

Might still be too high.

Set your gain properly then report back.

could be something wrong with the amp. Bad capacitors or individual blown power supply transistors can sometimes give symptoms like that.
