I've been reading like crazy over the last couple days trying to work out what I want to do with my car stereo. It is a 2010 Prius, so I know that comes with some issues (and probably some jokes). I'm a musician and audio engineer, so I know sound pretty well and have some background in car audio DIY stuff (installed previous systems, etc), but I'm definitely not well versed in whats on the market these days.
I'm looking for a modestly priced SQ oriented system. I'll probably do this in a few stages and the first thing I want to do is replace the godawful speakers with some 6.5" comps. Budget is $200 +/- $50 for the fronts. Not gonna worry about the backs for now. Might just fade them out anyways. I have a few amps at my disposal that I've picked up along the way. One is a likely awful Bazooka 2 channel amp that I used to run my sub with (I'm not a bumper by any means and ran it very subtley, so it was fine). I also have an old school Gelhard gxv349 I received from a friend. Its a 150x2 50x2 amp made in Germany, I think. I don't know much about it, but may use it for 50wx2 up front and 300x1 to the sub or something like that. The sub, which I may not even set up right now, is just a 1x12" infinity in a sealed cab. Sounds really nice for what I want from it.
I definitely want to replace the HU, but for now I'm going to stick with it, I think.
Soooo....I've been considering the following:
CDT 61a or maybe the 62.
JBL MS-62c - seems to get quite a bit of praise...trying to find a good price
Rainbow SLC or SLX
Morel Maximo 6 - super cheap on amazon right now
Focal 165 A1 - I know their studio monitors and like them
Open to other suggestions, of course. I'd like fairly smooth and mellow highs, so I'm wary of cheaper hard domes. I don't listen super loud(I get plenty of that on tour) and just want clear, full sound without being harsh or muddy. I do like a full, tight low end, but as I said, I'm not trying to impress anybody and just want reasonably accurate sound.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
