Default New user looking for some opinions on comps

Hey guys!

I've been reading like crazy over the last couple days trying to work out what I want to do with my car stereo. It is a 2010 Prius, so I know that comes with some issues (and probably some jokes). I'm a musician and audio engineer, so I know sound pretty well and have some background in car audio DIY stuff (installed previous systems, etc), but I'm definitely not well versed in whats on the market these days.

I'm looking for a modestly priced SQ oriented system. I'll probably do this in a few stages and the first thing I want to do is replace the godawful speakers with some 6.5" comps. Budget is $200 +/- $50 for the fronts. Not gonna worry about the backs for now. Might just fade them out anyways. I have a few amps at my disposal that I've picked up along the way. One is a likely awful Bazooka 2 channel amp that I used to run my sub with (I'm not a bumper by any means and ran it very subtley, so it was fine). I also have an old school Gelhard gxv349 I received from a friend. Its a 150x2 50x2 amp made in Germany, I think. I don't know much about it, but may use it for 50wx2 up front and 300x1 to the sub or something like that. The sub, which I may not even set up right now, is just a 1x12" infinity in a sealed cab. Sounds really nice for what I want from it.

I definitely want to replace the HU, but for now I'm going to stick with it, I think.

Soooo....I've been considering the following:

CDT 61a or maybe the 62.
JBL MS-62c - seems to get quite a bit of praise...trying to find a good price
Rainbow SLC or SLX
Morel Maximo 6 - super cheap on amazon right now
Focal 165 A1 - I know their studio monitors and like them

Open to other suggestions, of course. I'd like fairly smooth and mellow highs, so I'm wary of cheaper hard domes. I don't listen super loud(I get plenty of that on tour) and just want clear, full sound without being harsh or muddy. I do like a full, tight low end, but as I said, I'm not trying to impress anybody and just want reasonably accurate sound.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Mike

I have used CDT past and present. Both HD & ES models and I'd recommend either in a heatbeat.
Focal 165 A1's get a lot of love over here too...

Just bought and installed my JBL p660c 6.5" comps and they sound damn good. Very nice crossovers with tweeter attenuation and price of 149.99 free shipping a damn good deal. Very nice quality build overall of the mid woofer and tweeter

Currently using CDT audio comps as well. Can't go wrong getting that natural sound esp with the soft dome tweeter. And...price on them varies a bit...to a lot.

All of your choices are solid. No one is going to be able to tell you what the "best" one is because it's your ears. I know that's lame advice and I also know there is no way to audition every set.

I hear good things about the Polks in that price range too so you can toss those on the list as well. The B2 Audio set is very similar to the JBL MS62's but about half the price. Those are a good choice.

Good luck. And make sure to come back and do a review on the ones you choose.

I total understand what you're saying about how an internet forum can only be so helpful. I've experienced this a lot with studio monitors, microphones, instruments, etc., but it can be helpful if you can uncover a trend like "speaker A is really bright" or "the construction on speaker B is terrible."

Looking into the B2s. They do seem like a good deal, though I haven't been able to find a place selling the ES6.1i (newer version). I'll keep hunting.

I think I'm also going to add the Massive Audio CK6v. These seem liked by many people.

Eventually I know I'm going to have to just pull the trigger on something and see what happens, just trying to set myself up for success! Haha.

Cool, thanks. I sent them an email.

I'll look into the Tantric thing too. Are the more SQ or SPL? Are they available right now or still ramping up? I'll read the thread which will probably answer these questions, hah.

Thanks!
