Default Comparing mainstream to "little league"

Can we have a good old fashioned showdown and decide which is which?

I know many, if not all, big names of the car audio industry, which used to (or they never did?) make quality equipment now make garbage.

For example, I dont mean to insult the japanese (pioneer, kenwood, alpine, sony) but their new woofers look like cheap plastic toys. Compare it to a mexican made pioneer or an ?american? kenwood hq from 20 years ago.

Sorry, cant say much about american stuff, i'm from the old world. However I can say that mtx and kicker stuff also looks like complete trash...

Ground zero has taken europe by storm in the last three years. It is now considered both mainstream and high quality.

Pioneer still makes reference class head units.

Focal makes utopia class, well... utopias. But also el cheapo crap courtesy of JMLab.

Come on, let's have it, which is which? What still sounds good and what's trash. Especially when it comes to the affordable equipment.

Why buy a 1000$ set of Alpine F1 speakers when you can order the same kit from Scanspeak (who made it in the first place) for much, much less?

And who licenses what? is it true that the first generation alpine type r woofer was a rebranded JL w3 (before it turned into crap as well)?

I'd much rather run JL, JBL, or even alpine before junk like soundqubed or DC

Buy what you like.

Some of the major mainstream names are after the younger generation.

We "older wiser" people know better

It all depend on what your talking about. Subs, amps or speaker. Big powerful bass amp your going to have to buy Korean style like dd or soundqubbed. Now if you want midbass or midrange speakers and or amps jl and jbl are good choices. Now if you want low end monsters that can take beating then your back to korean style subs like dd and etc, but for sq you mite head back to jl and jbl. It all depend on your taste in music and how you want it to sound. 2 different word of equipement when talking about spl or sq so be clear. But yes mainstream have taken a bad turn. It all depend some are great and some or crap vice versa with korean amps also.

Given that everyone is going to have different budgets, goals, vehicles, and subjective ideas on what's "good", it's impossible to answer any of your questions. I already disagree with several things stated in this thread but that doesn't make me "right" or "wrong".

This. Like anything else in audio, the plethora of variables makes almost anything irrelevant.

i will say i like sundown alot
they make quality equipment and a huge range of subwoofers

want budget, get a e series
spl nsv3 (oh wait a sq "nsv3" is also in the works)
ground pounder Zv4
you want clean sounding mid price X series
broke but want some decent bump try your luck in the yard sale
i have gotten many things from the yard sale and never been disappointed.

they have a huge range of woofers you can "custom" make to what ever kind of woofer you want

as far as mainstream being junk, yeah alot of brands have started making crap
sony had some of the best equipment available, now not so much

pioneer still has alot of highend stuff but also crap you buy at walmart
i would run alpine, kicker, JL, or many of those other brands, they just wouldnt be my first choice as usually price to proformance better can be had.
a W7 is around $600 when a similar sundown x sub is $400
not that the x will walk all over the W7, but for the extra $200 you save it may not be worth it to get the JL

and i will add in sundown is border line mainstream.....

its not at the same level as Jl or alpine, but it is showing up on craigslist more and more, and more and more people are using it and spreading the word past the small group of hard core car audio guys

I took a ppi hiatus for about 15yrs. They arent as badass as they were but they are ok price to performance wise same w soundstream. some of the amps are korean and some chinese. jbl still has some decent stuff, but it has fallen off a bit imo over the last couple years due to shitty cs and cheaper lines of equip. I mostly avoid "mainstream" but also wouldnt consider myself to be a typical audio consumer
