Default How useful is Dayton DATS system?

Is this pretty much a must-have for people starting out into the diy sub building? My main concern is how useful are small signal parameters for higher powered subs? Thanks!

I'm looking at buying the Dayton and bassboxpro, but I just don't know how useful they are when you consider you are throwing a system in a car and powering them each sub with 700+ Watts.

How many people have buyers remorse after buying one or the other?

If you want to get a feel for pulling T/S, there is a basically free method (some parts are required) in the tutorial section called LIMP/ARTA.
I use the T/S with BBP and it seems to work but as far as comparing to large signal analysis I'm not sure either.
I would love a DATS though, its way faster.

After the Woofer Tester, the next cheapest (and best) option is the Smith and Larson woofer tester PRO. It pulls large signal parameters.

But it'll set you back a grand.

Small signal is better than nothing, but I still take them with a grain of salt on big ass moofers.

Cool thanks for the input. Think I will just do diy type measurements for now and if in a year I'm still messing around with custom woofers I may make the investment, although a $1000 is a bit much for me lol.

I use mine to test box tuning, and again to test box tuning after loaded in the vehicle. Helps show you how the loading affects things. I've done it with a clamp and dmm too, but the dats is so much faster.

I find it to be very useful and they are cheap. I use mine all the time even building a simple sealed box. Run t/s input in bbp6 design build use dats to check imp curve of box check again in car for shifts make any desired adjustments to box check curve again the beat on the setup. In vehicle can change a lot as well as box pacement.

Personally I think a cheap scope could be a better investment, like the dso nano or the usb one I've been using. Although I have a couple scopes and no dats or similar setup, so my views might be biased? And I've never built a custom sub and had a need to pull t/s specs.

DATS is very useful. You can check capacitors, resistors, and inductors. It's a signal generator, and you can use it as an o-scope. Like dbjunior said, it's great for checking resonance and impedance curves with the sub in an enclosure and in the vehicle. You can use it to get the impedance curves of your mids and tweeters and use that data to design a good passive crossover.

It's good for someone who uses all these extra features, but it's not worth buying if all you do is build beast subs. TSP's are not very important for beast subs anyways but can be pretty important for lower power or SQ stuff.
