Default thick top plate vs xmax wtf?

somebody has a good excuse..and I want to hear it...

but as I understand xmax is the distance the coil can travel and retain the same number of windings in the thickness of the top plate

0.5 * (ww - top plate thickness)

so, if you have a 1/2" top plate and a 2" ww, the xmax is 3/4"

but if you have a 1 1/2" top plate and a 2" ww, the xmax is 1/4"

edit: too tired to read apparently.

but I would say it has to do with having a larger distance through which you have flux. To counteract the increased top plate you would ideally throw a longer coil in it. That's why overhung, long xmax designs can get so huge. To get the stroke you want you have to increase top plate thickness and then you have to increase coil length to take advantage of that potential throw. At least makes sense in my head... it becomes a balance of flux distance, desired excursion, and desired field strength/lines.

If this sounds crazy, I blame the beer.

I would also assume you want more flux distance to keep lateral cone movement in check.

again my disclaimer of I'm talking out of my ass.

my goal is simplemaximum xmax.. and maximum P2P..

but I'd like someone to make sense of thick top plate motors since most crazy top plate motors are hailed as impressive/awesome/better

but underhung coils are short ww.. so maybe if you have a 2" top plate and a 1/2" ww, the xmax is 3/4"

and the same # of windings are always in the top plate {the whole coil}

it's just exactly opposite

The old definition of x-max is "overhang" on an over-hung motor; which decreases as you increase top plate thickness with a given coil -- that is correct.

The modern definition is 70% BL retention.

Your BL curve won't be as linear at the center with a thicker top plate (so distortion will be a bit higher at those levels) -- but your 70% definition won't change much in many instances... AND you *maximum* travel before the coil exits the physical gap increases with a thicker plate (more travel before damage or severe rocking when completely out of the gap).

You can see both changes in these graphs and also the shape of the curve.

As the top plate thickens the 82% BL figure drops -- as the BL isn't as linear in the center... but 70% BL is nearly the same between all three designs because the field is overall bigger so it works out better the farther you go in terms of BL retention.

If we went to 50% BL then you'd see the thickest plate having the highest travel by a good bit. In car audio woofers it's fairly common for folks to push their drivers to 50% BL levels of travel so thickening up the plates is a benefit for those applications.

Also as a note... I didn't optimize the design in terms of things like pole extension height, etc as I changed the TP thickness. I only change that one variable for simplicity.

You really should write a book or have a series of tech threads stickied. Weren't/aren't you working on an underhung Nightshade? That will be cool to see. Of course I'm looking for the optimized BL design you teased a few weeks ago.
