Default space required around sub box

I currently have a ported sa-15 in the trunk of my 2014 avalon and it sounds OK but I'm wondering it I gave it enough space since I made the box as wide and tall as I could.
I still have a few inches on top and a little on the bottom sides but how do you know if I have enough? I didn't know if it was a dumb question but matey I'll learn something.
I'm looking at buying a z4 15" next but now I'm wondering if I should get a 12" so the box would be smaller and have more room around the box.

That picture was when I just finished the box and wanted to see how it looked inside

I have read that if you face the sub towards the trunk lid to allow room for it to port in the cabin, but if you cant leave the room around then face it towards the cabin and seal it off from the trunk thats just what i have read i built a lot of boxes in trunks and they have been successful

Why is the port so close to the sub would be my 1st question?

Second, measure outside dims of box and subtract 1.5 two times should get you your cu ft for that 15. Sounds like you just threw some wood together w/o giving enough/too much airspace will also determine the subs output.

It's probably because I'm at work and I'm tired right now but I had a tough time understanding....
Your said to leave room around it if I face the sub and port towards the trunk lid but if I can't, face the sub towards the cabin and seal off the sides?
Like a infinite baffle but with a box still?
Would it be a bad idea if I left it like it is and cut out the middle of my rear deck between the speakers? My rear deck cover looks like just one big speaker grill. I'll reinforce the part that I cut out of course.

Or if I sealed off the sub like you said and cut out the center of my rear deck like I said? Sort of like a hatchback attemp?

The port has a 90* elbow and goes towards the other side of the box. It's 6 inches away from the other end and my box it tuned at 35hz.
I used the box calculator called Torres (spelling?)
This is the 7th box (I think) that I've built using that program. The box is about 2.9 cf^3 net after the sub, port and bracing displacements.

After the 7th box for the same sub, and you say it sounds ok......at that point I would seek a good designer. Just sounds like your wanting more from that sub.

Typically ports are away from the drivers. Not next to each other.

ReaD before you bash. He didn't say this is the 7th box for that sub. Has every box you built sounded fantastic?

Again, he said the port has a 90* bend, which bends away from the sub. If he put the port exit on the opposite side, the opening would be right next to the sub, which is what you don't want to do

OP, build another box for the same sub that's shorter and just add depth to make up for it. You might even be able to get a straight port in there
