Default Another Maxwell cap question

I have 8 batteries right now and a DC 270 alt. I compete in meca and plan on running 6 banks of caps. My question is XS says to run batteries and caps but other tell me if I'm gonna run caps to (just run caps) I don't know what I should do.

if its burp only then run just caps PERIOD. Instantaneous output beats batteries every time

if its daily then the combo will benefit.

If you are running way to much power for your class restrictions and the only way to add is caps then yes it will help, e.i. if you can only run 8 batts and 6 banks only, not just 14 cells combined any which way. If you can any which way then 14 banks of caps would be your best bet for burps.

I roll onto my burps so my amps wont protect and I can run as many caps/batteries as needed. I mean will it effect anything if I run a mix of both?

in the case where you add caps to the batts you already have, the caps would more than likely sustain the system for the "roll up", and then you will get into the batteries once in the burp/full tilt, or possible not even at all. When you burp with just batts and an alt you start at (lets just say) 14.4v, and once you get past 13v you know you are no longer sustained by the alternator, and are now dipping into your battery reserve. and usually the dip from 14.4 to 13v happens pretty fast since once you pass the alt amperage mark the voltage drops quick. When you add the caps, they will charge however high your alternator charges (14.4v), then when you burp you will get added amperage at all voltages 14.4v and below. So the dip that normally would fall off quick once you past your alternator is more of a gradual downward roll, and it falls off evenly. each .1v pretty much dissipates at the same pace with caps, unlike batts where the voltage drop is sudden. its much easier to watch and control

any kind of electrical upgrade it seems wouldn't hurt. Go caps for space/weight/and burp output

If you have 8 batteries already, definitely buy ultracaps.

For burps you can't beat caps. Even lithium dips down to its resting voltage fast. Once you defeat the alternator you will be down at 12.8 or whatever with lithium/agm. Lithium is good for sustaining that 12.8 for a long time.

Caps have no resting voltage as mentioned before. They will go all the way down to 0. But they will hold up whatever you are charging at much better and therefore you will be sending more wattage to the woofers. I can get a full burp and full clamp reading and only drop from 15v down to 14.6, when I had 10 batteries I would drop to 12.6. Just daily the caps take longer to charge up, and also will go down below that battery threshold if you aren't careful.

So should I keep the batteries and run caps also? Or just all caps? I've heard to run both from XS power but a few other's say just caps?
