Default Double Din with best EQ

It's been many years since I have been back on here...I haven't had a vehicle in a long time that has allowed me to tear into the stereo. Now I'm about to have a Tundra I can play with.

The last HU I had years ago, which I loved, was a Kenwood DNX5520. I loved the features it has such as the 11 band EQ, T/A...the whole nine.

I have no idea what is good now'a days so I have come seeking suggestions.

What do you guys suggest? EQ and T/A are the most important...

I personally like the Pioneer double DIN touchscreen HUs. I have the AVH-X3800BHS and it has a 13 band graphic EQ and TA, which you are looking for. This was last year's model. The newer models that just came out this year from Pioneer are the AVH-X390BS (the 2800 version, no HD radio and can't connect front facing camera) and the AVH-391BHS (same model as mine the 3800, has HD radio and able to connect the front facing camera). These units come w/ a 6.2" touchscreen and you can only purchase the model numbers w/ the ones ending in "1" through an authorized Pioneer dealer. The "0" models you can purchase anywhere online or through non authorized dealers.

Or if you want, you can purchase the AVH-X490BS or AVH-X491BHS, they're the 7" screen versions. Same features as the 390 and 391 just w/ a bigger screen. I also have the X490 model and is installed in my wife's Sequoia and I actually prefer it over the 3800 just for the fact that the buttons are in the bottom of the screen instead of the side and for me it's easier to press and not have me accidentally pressing the display button and turning of my screen.

I was looking into that just now...seems to be a nice HU. I can't believe how the price has come down over the years on double dins...you couldn't get a used double din for $300 years ago, now they're less than that brand new.

That Pioneer has a volume knob, which I forgot to mention was a feature I would prefer as well. I guess Kenwood, Pioneer and the like are all about the same tier now as far as quality goes...?

Unfortunately no, none of the Pioneer touchscreen HUs I've seen have a volume knob. That is the only downside that I miss w/ my older non touchscreen Pioneer HU, which had the volume knob.

I think Kenwood is the only one that still has a volume knob on their touchscreen HUs as far as the higher quality stereo brands are concerned. Not really a fan of Kenwood too much and what I read as far as reviews go, some of their touchscreen and regular HUs had whining noise after you installed it. Don't know if it's a problem w/ the install or the HU itself but I think it might be the HU since a bunch of people have complained about it in their reviews of the system. Maybe Kenwood might have fixed the problem w/ the newer models for this year, I don't know.

Also I think Soundstream, Jensen and the lower tier stereo companies still might have the volume knob on their touchscreen HUs. From what I've read though, their UI isn't all that great and is very slow.

Clarion NX706 2-DIN DVD Multimedia Station (2016) price has been contested on Amazon, initially offered for $429 which is dealer cost, them fixed at $699. Price still drops to dealer cost too someone reported it. 15 band EQ, TA, high and low pass filters plus digital optical out. There is usually one listed under warehouse deals near dealer cost as open box currently $452. If you follow the search the price will occasionally drop briefly. Just released in July is the NX807, $666.66 2-4 week ship.

Alternatively if you want true full DSP you can purchase virtually any double din and get a Minidsp CDSP 6x8 for $299, add a dedicated true measurement microphone UMIK for $75, they both sell direct from Hong Kong. Under the hood these DSP's offer unlimited options, as good as or better than Helix, programmable controller with 4 presets which can also control only channels 7 & 8 (bass knob), in addition to channels 1-6. Active 3 way front stage plus sub? You bet. Integration with REW (best free room analysis software out there) including 5 bands of PEQ per input and output, REW can generate PEQ's for direct import into MiniDSP as well. This option is very tempting if considering an Android head unit that supports Torque OBDII allowing you to view vehicle diagnostics on screen and integrate with factory steering wheel controls and other OEM functions. XDA Developers is a great resource for Android platform double din info including custom ROM's.

I complete in SQ, still use the Pioneer DEH80PRS as it has independent right left EQ, TA, and Auto-tune, however I'm using the Minidsp6x8 for TA & PEQ, 80 PRS for fine tuning while driving.

Most Android units have knob btw. Can also be purchased factory direct through companies like Joying for around $300, including vehicle specific harnesses, TPM monitor modules, 4G dongle, etc. Quad core, 2gb DRR3, Intel Sofia processors...
