Default front batt really necessary?

I was just thinking about selling my blue top to a noob and buying a better battery later. I think my car would stil start fine with the CandD 370 in the rear with 1/0 power and 4ga ground run to the front w/chassis ground. But is it good for the alt to have that battery real close? I just wonder why some guys with like 5 batts still leave a red top up front.

Wont hurt a thing. Most BMW's have the battery in the trunk (performance reasons), the Olds Alero have the battery under the back seat (like the old Beetles). In fact, most european cars have the battery in the rear. The Dodge Viper has the battery in the left rear fender (early models anyway)

some magnums have the battery in the back also, right next to the spare tire.

connecting the front batt to the back can give your overall battery bank one extra battery. may not give the same output like your bigger bank but it can give some more support. Most usually run there big three to the front battery and then run power wires from that point to the back. This will allow the current coming from the alternator to travel to front and back batteries. If you feel like you need to connect front to back batteries, just run a single line from your alternator to the back bank.
