They can't power hdd's of any size.

You will have to have a power source for them.

The only way you can get away without a power source (inverter) would be a flash drive (thumb drive/jump drive/usb storage device.)

Are you trying to power it from the head unit through the USB, or do you have an inverter so you can plug it in. If you're trying to power the portable hard drive from the head unit find out the how many amps it can put out. That will keep you from buying a portable hard drive that won't work.

As for brands, Here is one that if you had an DC to AC inverter would be just about perfect.

If you're running it off the usb power, this combo would suit you well.

Personally I'm running a 80gb that is just for music and it's more than enough for all of my files.

Not true. If your hdd has a low enough power consumption then it will work fine(personal experience). Any of the "Green" Hard drive's they're selling now will give you plenty of overhead

You can try it. You might get lucky, but I still don't think it will work without an extra power source.

And remember, with a HDD you wont be able to play at really high volume levels (if you are loud).

I still stand behind my statement of using flash drives. They are smaller yes, but they can't skip and you can't scratch the non existant spinning disc inside it.
